It's not the actions that people dislike but the embarrassment you project that your "not so nice in reality" members look down on. Well no SHIT. People are human! I try to be friendly to people in general, but sometime's I just don't like someone. Sometimes I'm having a bad day. Sometimes I REALLY don't like someone. As for basic info... there's not much to it. You've got the mask and wig, often affixed to the mask permanently, but sometimes not. Then the body suit so your skin matches the mask and look smooth. Some people who are new to it are unsure of the necessity of the bodysuit, but believe me, even an average amount of body hair and light skin tone looks weird in contrast to the mask. You don't talk under the mask because it won't sound right, and it's more about suit acting. There's a lot of stage performances in japan, and the mascots only talk via recording. During meet-and-greets they do not talk. There's a lot of costume-acting influence here. You want to get your character across with body language only. Since outings and con appearances are considered more like a "performance", you don't unmask in public to "ruin the magic", or "show", as I like to describe it.

The rest is the same as regular cosplay, wear a nice outfit, take pretty photos, show off. Since meetups are difficult on the western end of things, live streaming is popular as well as doing it in groups. A lot of kigurumi fans just like to spectate and chat, so there's that too. Because the mask looks exactly like the character (or close enough), you can cosplay other things AS that character, or even create an original character, which is popular.

It's also important to be able to crossplay properly. Hip and breast padding, proper feminine body language, etc. Though there are male characters and also females who do this.

Some people make masks themselves, but most people buy from an established maker. There's a good few that will sell to english-speaking people, and some that will ship overseas if you can communicate with them in japanese. There's also western makers.

Making your own is tough, but there's a lot of resources and tutorials out there, especially lately.

Yes, there is a fetish side, many japanese that do this have a thing for tights and bondage and stuff. Though they usually keep that to more private venues. Just because it's also a fetish to some people doesn't mean they don't also enjoy the other aspects about it. Players with a fetish are more rare in the west, I think, but who knows. We try not to leave our porn all over the stairs for people to step on like the furries do, so to speak. I'm more interested in cosplay and entertaining people, myself.

The community is super tiny and we get a lot of new members FROM the furry end of things, and from zentai enthusiasts, so be nice to them.

It's more complicated than that. As an example, at about the time that I was realizing that I would never get a kigurumi or succeed in life in any way I accidentally stumbled upon a group of people including Miharu who were talking about how the fetishists were ruining everything and were responsible for kigurumi's shitty or even non-existent public image. As a fetishist I was offended, since I had not done anything to contribute to the situation and thought it was quite unfair to blame people outside the group for the problems the group was having. I might have just left it at that except that at that moment kigurumi had transformed for me from the stupid hope of a sexually frustrated young man into an open wound/permanent testament to my worthlessness. And so Miharu became for me a symbol of all the people who look down on me or at least would look down on me if I was worth noticing at all. It didn't hurt that I couldn't stand his attitude. It's true that it's meaningless to say that a popular person is less nice than they act, the leader of even the tiniest clique is going to treat anyone who doesn't kiss their ass like scum. The problem is that those of us who want to commiserate about being excluded can't exactly admit that we are excluded, so we need someone bad to focus on and blame for our situation.
