I've had arguments like this thousands of times. It's simple. No one's acting grown up by not using them, it's just a matter of what the site's content attracts. It's no secret that certain content/posting styles can attract some people more than others. Using 'smilies' would only make plenty of undesirables feel welcome here more easily.
