>> No.10492146

"Bitch get out of the way" is an excellent example of what tvtropes calls a Woolseyism. It's not literally correct, but it does a much better job for that scene than the current touhouwiki version (which I cannot paste here because touhouwiki is down for me now).

Translators should worry about preserving meaning, and that scene loses a lot of meaning if you simply translate it word by word. The normal japanese voice is polite. For girls, the politeness is coupled with a lot of feminine/cute forms. What Alice wants Marisa to say is an order, which is much more jarring in Japanese than in English. Adding a "bitch" there makes that scene work as intended (it's supposed to be comedy, because Alice and Marisa together are constantly poking each other). With the current translation, it's just another meh moment.

There was a lengthy thread about the EOSD translation some time ago. Some people from /jp/ actually started to fix parts of it during the thread. Someone also made a thread about it on pooshlmer, but that thread just resulted in pooshlmer fighting among itself for some reason.

Many parts of it were originally translated in a really strange way, basically trying to use japanese grammar and sentence structure in english, which resulted in dialogue that sounded way too unnatural. Seriously, no one would ever have talked that way.

Yep. ZE is really rude and inapropriate for a girl to say. I'm still to see any decent attempt to create "Marisa speech" in English. There was a really old hard translated comic in danbooru that made her finish her sentences with "yo!". While I didn't like that, it's still the best attempt I saw so far.

Usually Dead created a speech impedment for Marisa, so that she was literally saying "ze" in the end of english sentences, which was a complete disgrace.

The word demon isn't appropriate because it has outworldly and religious connotations, while youkai are earthly beings that can even work for the gods. In touhou, demons/devils are a kind of youkai. So I'd not hard to translate.

I'm all for using the stablished terms. For example, if Lafcadio Hearn had initially translated kappa as "water goblins" or "japanese duckturtles" then I'd be for calling them that. But he didn't did so, so today it's "correct" to use Tengu, Kappa, Oni and so.

But I'd translate Shikigami as "familiar" without a second thought. Because that's what they are.
