On second thought, I still don't quite understand why I couldn't ron here.

There should be easily more than enough han to make the call, yet it went right by without the option ever showing up.

OP, this is why you can't:

I'm sure you felt pretty good about snatching up those wind tiles and making sets, but they are neither your wind seat nor the round wind. You set yourself up for a difficult time if you try that without having some other kind of yaku in the bag already.

So the short version is, you still had no yaku.

Tenhou is quite easy to use.

http://tenhou.net/0/?L7447
This is the room most 4chan users play in. The standard one ends in L0000 and is quite a bit more active, but has a very big mix of good users and complete newbies that have a high rage quit ratio.

Once you enter your name and come to the screen in the pic:

1) You don't need to worry about these tabs as you'll be on the main page by default, but the 1st one is the main page, 2nd one shows current games being played in the room, and you can follow the url there to see time delayed games. The 3rd tab shows your game history and has replays of the games.

2) Your name and stats.

3) All these buttons are for different rule sets of mahjong. The most popular one is the 4-player one that allows for red 5s and is both east and south round. In the screenshot, the 2:8 means that there are 2 players currently waiting to start a game using this rule set, and 8 players playing already. Just click the button to line up to play, and once 4 players are waiting a game will start.

You might want to play some singleplayer mahjong outside of tenhou first if you're completely new though, the discard timelimit can be quite stressful for new players.

Chitoi is a hand that often reaches iishanten or even tenpai quickly, and then stops there. Since it's almost entirely dependent on the luck of your draws, it can be hard to complete.

Some tips: keep an eye on the discard pond, and get rid of tiles that have been discarded two or three times. Prioritise keeping live tiles to maximise your chances of drawing them. Hang onto terminals and honours that are less likely to be used in your opponents' hands.

If you like Rummy, at least. Guess it depends on the type of card games you like. If you like poker, then you'd probably like mahjong as well. They're both games where luck plays a big role in the short run, but being good at the game will give you an edge over opponents in the long run. At least that's how it feels to me, having played poker somewhat seriously in the past and taking mahjong pretty seriously now as well. Oh, and both are just as frustrating.

Watched that first part, right? Open the wikipedia yaku page or http://www.japanesemahjong.com/reachmahjong/hand_values/han_value_frameset.htm and then go full Akagi, ie start learning by playing with bots trying to get a certain hand you choose (use http://arcturus.su/tenhou/index.html for Tenhou explanations in English).

I recommend starting with trying for tanyao/tan'yao, 7 Pairs or Straight, simple stuff like that. Play with bots until you start to feel like you're getting the hang of it a little. Then read more in-depth into those yaku pages and master a couple more of them to try getting during games. Also read on the concept of getting hans, so that you start understanding a bit on how to minimize point losses, and even more importantly furiten, so that you don't get your shit slapped back to you. Also read up "UmaiKeiki's defense guide" on Osamuko to get basic theory about how to not deal into riichis. Then drop the bots, register your Tenhou ID and start playing with real people on Lobby 7447 or 0000.

After that it'll be up to you. Read on more in-depth theories, build on your foundations, learn more yakus, work on your defense, watch the other 3 parts of that tutorial video, etc. But above all play a lot.
And keep cool. Don't ragequit even if you get fucked up. You can also have your windows screen grabber ready during play and grab screenshots of winning hands and study them, it's a good way to learn the hands.

No problem! Getting into Mahjong is a bit complex, but it's a fun game, and revealing the hidden strategy layers beneath it as you start to grasp the rules and conditions step by step makes it even more fun.
Also /a/ has frequent Mahjong threads (mixed into the Saki threads, generally has the word "tanoshii" in the subject of OP post), you can also ask people for stuff in those in times when the /jp/ thread isn't active. They mostly talk about bullshit, but there are still helpful people hanging out.

And like >>10497659 said, it'll be OK if you just understand Furiten by watching the vid. You can return to it later, after you've started understanding the game better.

Can someone explain how the author deduced those waits?
This shit is driving me insane. What must have the hand looked like if the 9m and 8s are late discards? How the hell do you determine the wait is for 69s just from the late discard of 8s?

>> No.10497851

>>10497834
I'll try. Terminal discards mean he's waiting for middle tiles. But about that 8s, absolutely no idea how he could decide those 6s and 9s. I'm thinking about 568s, which means the wait is 4s or 7s.

Anyway, what handbook is that? Kinda curious about that.

>> No.10497852

>>10497834
Okay, well a taatsu is two or more tiles that can form a set. A taatsu like 788s is versatile since it can become either a sequence like 789 or a triplet of 888. That's why these shapes are usually prioritised over other taatsu, and therefore the shape can be surmised from when a tile is discarded.

As for the 9m, that looks like urasuji (or "back vein", as it's called in Akagi) for a 678 shape.

Actually let me clarify this. According to the terminology list on Osamuko, a taatsu is:

Two things. Firstly, riichi with a yakuman is generally a bad idea since it doesn't raise the value of your hand and it calls attention to you, so other players are more likely to start playing defensively to avoid dealing in. Secondly, all four of the tile you're waiting on, pei 北, have already been discarded. There are no longer any tiles available for you to win with.
