I remember back before I became a Touhou, my exboyfriend was a huge mega touhoutard (like he was one of the bad parts of the fandumb, stole art, edited, it without credit, claimed it was his, insisted dumb shit)

Anyway he was bitching before about this one girl who got into Touhou and only really played the fighters, saying she wasn't a fan and that it didn't count because, and I quote, "The Touhou fighters aren't REAL Touhou games, they don’t count"

At the time I didn’t know shit nor cared about Touhou but if I could go back in time I would slap him because

Even though ZUN did not have the same level of control over the fighters (ie, he was not the only person who worked on every single aspect of the game), he still was involved in their production and had a hand in both the storylines and gameplay, and so they are ``real'' for all intents and purposes. This cannot be argued by anyone who is not a secondary.

I don't consider them 'real' Touhou games.

But that's because I'm atrociously shitty at them. I can 1cc all the Windows integer games just fine, even on Hard mode (I honestly haven't given Lunatic a single attempt, but I could probably 1cc them all if I had enough time), but when it comes to all fighting games except stuff like Smash Bros, my hands just get all retarded and I do stupid shit. I've never been able to beat any of the Touhou fighting games. I can't even tell what's going on, even after reading about what all the buttons do. I just get smacked over and over without doing any damage, even while mashing the buttons while trying to use actual strategy instead of just mashing buttons.

The fighting games can go fuck themselves. The real Touhou games are the integer ones.

Also, I hate Tenshi and don't give a shit about Iku, so they can rot for all I care.

I consider the characters to be a part of Touhou. They are interesting and they have their place. Whether the fighting story lines can be considered cannon or not is a different story. But I like them for what they are.

The Touhou fighting games aren't difficult at all. Just hold the directional button which points away from your foe to block and spam one move over and over. Occasionally use spellcards to spice it up a bit.

Of course this won't work on any difficulty above easy, but if you're bad at fighters and just want to get through them, it doesn't really matter so much.
