Funny, NONE of the discussed games where these characters show up as main ones are in that list NOR count as a VN.

In fact, their only real attempt at creating Makai VN was Infinite, and that game flopped to hell, it didn't even include many characters, mostly Disgaea 1 pandering.

It actually looks very confusing and overwhelming at first glance but it's actually quite simple for an SPRG.

My advice is to learn the gameplay one bit at a time and don't rush into it at once. They are very fun games and I highly suggest giving them another shot.

I'm not sure why people are SO attracted to Asagi, I find her annoying and a pointless character, there are cuter ones that aren't ever mentioned in here and are very popular elsewhere, so it at least has some adorable characters that you could be interested in.

I like how Makai series play except for Phantom Brave even though I hate the fanbase. Go try Phantom Brave before you complain about Disgaea and Makai Kingdom, you'll be so furious with the amount of grinding and choices.

By the time you reach farther than midgame you WILL have to give pot skills to other higher attack weapons that you will find, with probably higher levels by default, which in turn, is a whole grinding story.

You will also need to summon AT LEAST Ash to safely grind, clearing the way, and have 3 Monk dudes to teleport out when in dungeons.

Also, grinding throwaway characters to easy mana is part of the game, you will end up taking forever to clear it otherwise.

No, you don't. Just stay back and spam the basic pot attack, Marona doesn't need to worry about turns. You can summon phantoms when you get in trouble.

It's been years since I played, but the part where you return to Putty island to defend them is a fine example as to why you have to grind and use at least Ash, the whole thing can't be cleared with just Marona alone as the main guy has a ton of magic resistance and attack, while they will also gather around Marona even if you try to stealth in.

You not only need a better weapon, you're OBLIGED to summon others in many parts of the game.

Disgaea 2 was the best Disgaea game, and Rozalin made it even lovelier.

Story-wise it might be very cliche and/or pale.
But mechanics-wise it is incredibly solid, and I argue for it having the best character development and relations in the series so far.

Why are the translations so shit for NI games?

When I didn't understand spoken Japanese I could tell something was a bit off, but now that I'm able to understand a little spoken Japanese I simply can't stand the Japanese voices anymore because I'm reading one thing and hearing another thing.

But then oh my god the English voices make me want to shoot myself, it might just be better to mute voices, but then it feels a little empty.

On the NIS American forum the Japanese president just said no, NIS was under financial pressure. The Japanese were originally promised a trilogy of games in the La Pucelle universe/style. The remake for the PSP, similar to the Disgaea series had the abilty to skip attack graphics and this speeds up the game considerably. Disgaea 4 felt like the most refined game, I just felt that it failed considerably to capitalize on anything that encompassed it.

Disgaea one and two had a very free pace to them. You could continue the story if you felt like it, or run around forever in the item world, or retract previous stages for perfect scores and secrets. And it was all good, and the powers you got from it was enough to make you able to beat the future stages considerably faster, so it's not as if you ever "wasted" too much time to begin with by not doing the main quests.

But Disgaea 4? Every side-track thingy kind of indirectly punished you.
If you didn't proceed in the main story, you didn't get those council/ambassador positions and evil-symbols or whatever it was, that greatly modified the stat growth of your characters.
If you were to run around doing side thingies instead of the main quest, and levelled up 10-20 levels or something, you could easily found yourself having lost a potential extra growth of 50-100+% that stat growth, simply because you hadn't unlocked the right ambassador positions and evil-symbols.

It did felt more refined. But it really did usher you to move forward all the time. A straight line, with as little side tracking as possible. Then all of as sudden the game was over, and the side tracking became less fun because of that instead. Taking things easy or to stroll around at your own pace exploring the parts you found interesting is more or less punished in game.
The fourth game was better than the third game, but it still really failed to capitalize on the strengths of the first and second game.

I don't know why are you trying to argue about Disgaea 4 based on butchered up versions.

Even the Japanese-translated version with no butchering doesn't even have support for Append, a lot of the content is missing in NISA's release and it is often very important.

This is why I haven't played it yet, I'm NOT playing a butchered version for NISA's sake.

That is not true. Well, not as you point it out anyways. Most of the really good stuff (like raising the effect and AoE of the evil symbols) could only be unlocked in chara world and carnage. That's it, post game and post level 100 (I'll even say post 1000). It's just that the game moved almost all content to post game, so you could not power level and shit while you were doing the main story, so until you have beaten the game at least once the story scenarios were always challenging.
That's how I see it anyways, and I think it was a good decision. After all not all people want to reach level 9999 and just want to play for the story. I do agree that it makes playing the game a little more annoying. I hope they find a good balance for D2.

You could still at the very least unlock minister positions and better evil symbols.
Though I believe you just mainly solidified my points.

The game is just really geared towards getting done with the main story as quickly as possible, and it really doesn't encourage any sidetracking until you are "done" with the game.
Which is something I am really not sure is a nice design choice.

Personally I had a more engaging and enjoyable time with the previous games where it felt like I set the pace myself.

I wonder if Miss Allaprima will ever get her own game. I don't think it's likely since she's Takehito's character, not NIS. Still, her prominence in Disgaea has been slowly going up and she does has a fairly significant fandom.

Still, unless you've read the Pleinair Handbook and some of Takehito's works you'll know jack shit about her. For instance, did you know she's a complete glutton who can eat an entire shark?

No, well yeah, I agree with that, but I think that in this case (D4) is, at the very least, not a bad thing. The minister positions give very small boost that are not even noticeable in the main game, except for a couple ones, same for everything else. So it doesn't makes a lot of sense to me to unlock all the additional content early when you are not even going to need it, and if you do complete it the main game becomes easy as shit, so I think it isn't so bad.
You still have item world and such to play around, and I have some characters in level 200 yet I still have a lot of shit to unlock in the senate, considering that you beat the main story around lvl 100 I don't think you can run out of stuff during the main story.
In short, while I agree that the game it's a lot more streamlined (content wise) in the beginning, I think it was a nice change of pace for the series.
