IN one of my posts like a bunch of people said they were "saging" my thread, what does it mean? Sage is like a wise person, so are they saying my thread had some good wisdom? cause it was supposed to be funny not intellectual.
ps here'shave a cute picture of my marisa chibi<3

It's short for "sageru". It means that the post that has sage in email field doesn't "bumb" your thread(return it to first thread on page 0) . Usually used for polite purposes, like if your post doesn't really have nothing of value to add to the thread. It should be on faq

You have to understand Japanese culture in order to understand sage. The Japanese people are a very pathetic people.

In Japan, it is common for a person to feel "unworthy" when posting in a thread and they feel that they don't deserve the right to bump a thread to page 0.

It's all very pathetic and that degree of low self-esteem is just something that the far more confident and charismatic western mind is not capable of understanding.

I don't know any Japanese besides "kawaii" (cute) and "arigatou" (thank you), but I'll try to explain it.

'Sage' is not a Japanese word; like you said, in English it means a wise person. This is a translation of a Japanese word of the same meaning.

When you "sage" a thread, you're declaring yourself wiser than the OP, and basically saying that the thread is beneath you and should 404.

The japanese word '上げる' meaning 'to elevate' refers to the raising of the thread to the top of the thread list. When a post is posted the normal way, the thread is "raised up" to the top of the thread list.

The mailto:sage links in some of the posts are essentially public displays of politeness; from the Japanese "下げ", meaning "down", and pronounced "sah ge". Keeping the thread down instead of raising it up contributes a post without changing the thread order. This allows posters to contribute needless or off-topic posts without disturbing the thread order.

Back in 2008 we shared some of the userbase with the text boards and saging actually does matter in these places, since every thread is archived forever, it would be really rude to bump a year old thread back to the front page.

Incidentally, in the beginning /jp/ was a very slow board and bumping a week old thread was looked down upon so saging was useful.
Now it just became a little meme.

It's ironic that /jp/ doesn't understand that sage is not really that important to use on an imageboard, especially one like /jp/. Sure, it has its uses, but go to Futaba and see how many posts use sage. Very few. Compare to 2channel and you will see the difference. For textboards it is an important thing. When /jp/ talks about sage and why it should be done they give reasons that are for textboards, but this is not a textboard, so what they are saying is nonsense. Japanese people can tell the difference but /jp/ cannot.

I still laugh at how 4chan doesn't understand what sage means.

If only I knew moon so I wouldn't have to spend time on a board that imports foreign concepts and then DOES IT WRONG all the time.

Using sage as a way to "insult" someone's post or thread is just completely wrong and a retarded misuse of a good feature that is so popular in sites like 2ch and Futaba. Fuck, iichan and 4-ch do it right. It's just 4chan and 4chan's lame knockoffs that fail at using sage.

The true meaning of sage means that YOUR POST isn't worthy enough to bump the thread. It's ironic, because you think that you're insulting others while you're just, in fact, insulting yourself. Yes, sage can be used when posting a derogatory comment in a thread that you don't want to bump, but posting with just the word "sage" accomplishes nothing but contribute to spamming the board. The trend of replying with the name of a tripfag and sage is even worse, as it accomplishes nothing and only serves to increase the e-penis of whoever you're "attacking".

The sage feature was never meant to serve as an implied insult or general disagreement! Why people started using it that way is beyond me. There are plenty of reasons why one would choose not to bump a thread with his reply. For example, bumping threads with stupid one liner replies should be discouraged and those people should be coerced into using sage instead.

I want to use sage, yet I almost never do it on 4chan because people will jump on me thinking I'm insulting their post or something.

Sage originated on textboards with either no deletion cycle or a really long one. Additionally, 2ch-style BBS-es have a thread list at the tp of the page, which lists all the threads on the first few pages, right there, together, with no need for a thread to be on the first page to be seen. Posting with sage on a site like that does no harm to the thread, as it's not going to die if it's not bumped. On imageboards, especially fast ones like 4chan, if a thread is not bumped evey few minutes, it runs the risk of dying (on the faster boards, that is. A thread on this board may last a day or two with no bumps, depending on whether the board experiences a flood of new threads). Due to this, users tend to view sage as a harmful thing--which, if it's done enough, it can be. However, it is mostly just used to express the desire of a poster to let the thread die faster, since one sage post isn't going to kill a thread.

Which meaning of sage is ``correct''? Depends on the setting. On a slow board, sage doesn't really have any meaning at all. Slow boards require you to go back a few pages to see all of the active threads. On a faster board, a simple F5 will likely give you mostly different threads than were on the board last time you looked. On these faster boards, the high rate of new thread creation means that, if sage is done enough, it can kill a thread, and if it's just one person doing it, it expresses, as I said before, a desire to see the thread die faster.

In both cases, sage does not, in reality, do anything. Neither interpretation of sage is more valid. Just use it in whatever manner the other users of the board tend to interpret it.
