The Chinese government is interested in promoting it's language and culture overseas, so it's easier to get Chine scholarships than Japanese ones. Longer ones, too. A decent score you can get a 12 month course at a Chinese university, that includes free accommodation, a small salary, a round trip through the country and job opportunities. Similar Japanese programs are nearly non existent. If you're not in the top 10% you can still get 6-8 week long courses in Beijing all expenses covered.

I know this because I did some research and talked to a lot of people who've taken mandarin classes in my area

Yeah, just get ready for the associations that will be made.

When I made the mistake of taking a class, I had one guy who talked about 4chan and reddit the whole time, a black guy that cosplayed, read manga and played his weeaboo 3DS games in class, a fat girl that mentioned Junji Ito at least once per class, and that fucking guy that exists in every one of these classes that loved to try and correct the native Japanese teacher about every little thing because he saw it in an anime.

I pretended to be ignorant of everything they droned on about.

The buttfrustration that ensued when the teacher once mentioned that anime is mostly for kids was pretty great, though.

For my first Japanese class I never even mentioned the word anime or manga throughout the whole semester.

I never participated in the discussions the two landwhales in front of me were having involving Naruto and Death Note.

On the essays, I wrote masterpieces compared to the rest of the class. I even made up an excuse saying that I used a translator to get complicated words.

It ended up being the easiest course I've ever taken, even though I took one of the toughest teachers.

On the last day, with everyone thinking I'm some smart ass motherfucker, I told them during the last-day-of-the-semester party that I learned all my moon from anime and that I learned absolutely nothing that I didn't already know from the class.

Wouldn't saying you're interested in Japanese culture and it's a great country and you'd wish to understand the language be okay? There are other reasons to study Japanese other than just the anime, too.

And I used to think too much of other people's opinions too, but now I have been doing what I want and now I think it's stupid to think too much what others would say about such trivial things. You're just limiting what you can do in your life if you think too much like that. And btw I'm not saying now that you'd be stupid or you'd think this way.

Other people don't kill you if you tell them about things you like. I kind of understand people who don't want to tell others they're watching anime for example, but learning a language shouldn't be a secret (well I haven't told my mom I'm studying Japanese either, but I don't have any reason to hide it either, we just don't talk about different things that much.)

I just say this because this just reminded me of one of my friends who lives very limited life because he's always afraid that others would say something bad about it. You guys don't be the same. I understand it's not easy to tell others things you're afraid to tell, but if they're just trivial things, it's stupid to fear telling others. Even if others would say you're stupid because you do something, then so what? You don't die of hearing someone saying you're doing something which they think is stupid. And you can't always please everyone.
