I don't think you understand. ZUN is not the best writer. He knows it's much easier for the player to relate with a character if it doesn't stand out too much, or says or does too many things. Marisa succeeds as a true protagonist. Reimu fails, instead being the vehichle that moves the story forward. If you want a story, you pick Reimu. If you want to feel like the hero, you pick Marisa. It's as simple as that. Marisa's "plainness" is her defining feature. There's a reason she's called ordinary magician: she's meant for the ordinary man.
