Where should I start with Higurashi?

The pictures on here make it seem cute and fun. Then this week at anime club they played an episode of the Higurashi anime and it was really silly and stupid. There was a lot of pedophilia too. Last night I tried to watch the live-action Higurashi movie on youtube but it was really grim-dark and serious. Like there was a bunch of blood and Rika was sad the whole time.

Start from the very first season, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, then go onto HnNKKn Kai. Don't worry about Higurashi Kira which is probably what you watched. Don't skip to The Masturibayashi Hen bcause that spoils the whole fucking story. The beginning chapter is Onikakushi-Hen.
