10094409 No.10094409 [Reply] [Original]

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post a thread like this, but I know for sure its not /a/, since it got deleted after like 5 replies.

Anways, my Japanese teacher is forcing me to do a presentation on anime (in Japanese) tomorrow. How do I do this the right way? How do I avoid being "that guy" who -chose- anime as his presentation topic? I wanted to do something else, but he insisted on this, and I want to make the best of it and seem as classy as possible. What do I talk about? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Pic related: Its anime.

To avoid being "that guy", make your presentation academic in tone.

Talk about otaku subculture as a postmodern condition of post-war Japan. Talk about moe as a contemporary aesthetic and the narrative elements that compose it. Talk about anime history and how it has changed over the decades. Talk about how ancient Japanese culture influences contemporary anime in theme and style.

Honestly, it's easy to avoid being "that guy". In fact, I'm sure most of the students in your class don't give a fuck. I know I wouldn't.

>> No.10094607

...if you have to do anime you can go three different routes

1. Economic - talk about the economic impact and influence of anime. Showing how it was of economic importance in post war japan (during this period Japan was selling off pretty much every artisan wear they could and anime was no different) then slowly switching it to an example of how the rising value of the Yen lowers the profit from exporting anime to other countries lowering the profit margin and forcing Japanese Producers to slash production budgets and focus on the obsessive fan market.

2. Artistic - Compare and contrast the artistic influences of anime starting from Astro Boy - Walt Disney, then expanding it to Neon Genesis Evangelion - That post Renaissance art style with the high usage of shadows.... I forget the name because it's like 2 AM here. In general how it began to focus less on commercial art and more on high art as time went on ( It did loop right back around to commercial though)

3. Talk about something that relates tangentially to anime, that you're an expert on and how it relates to anime. Since it's due tomorrow I doubt you're willing to pull the research to make the other 2 topics interesting, so just go with what you know and hope for the best.
Heck you can do an entire presentation on how in Japan no one cares if the lips are synched to voice but in America and Europe lips are always synched to voice

What? Anime has always been mass media. Pop culture. Some studios do experiment, but it's disconnected from the industry standard. Many consider anime to be an example of dissolution of the high-low dichotomy. Japan doesn't even really adhere to it to begin with.

>>10094614
That's a damn shame. They really are interesting topics. Here's another one: How a escapist subculture alienates the members of that particular culture and augments a state of hyperreality amongst the populace. The 2D > 3D deal is a good example of this.

I meant that in a rather interesting way, since it doesn't matter what you get as a final product as long as you take your inspiration from a certain source. Like anime went from being inspired from a commercially successful product like Walt disney and Astroboy to being inspired by mis-mash of Hungarian, Japanese and English folk tales and a movie prop guide book (Excalibur) to make Berserk.

While commercial profitability is always going to be a mainstay of the industry the fact that they are taking risk on the source of the original idea is pretty amazing. Heck look at Banner of the Stars/Crest of the stars/Legend of the Galactic Heroes, they are all anime based on Political discourse and border policies. How does that even happen man! The rising value of the Yen definitely put a dent on what studios were willing to risk (We're never going to get another season of Bartender...) and as such anime went right back to focusing on vapid and stupid, yet commercially successful ideas, but that doesn't change the fact that at one point, it was better.

>>10094622

>back to focusing on vapid and stupid, yet commercially successful ideas
It's always moving, and yeah some shows do tend to be formulaic, but that's par for the course. It was the same back then too. We still get some interesting/novel ideas, like say, Chuu2, but more than that, it's the execution as well. Something like K-ON, though arguably formulaic, is executed very well. It doesn't pretend to be anything more than what it is. I respect that.

I feel that you're cherrypicking. If anime uniqueness/creativity is distributed normally, than we see more because more shows are being produced. At any rate, as a whole, it has much more variation and integrity than western equivalents. In the end, these guys are making what they want to see.
