Why do people seem to fantasize about living in Japan? It's a terrible country to live in, especially for the average NEET.

No welfare/autismbux system to leech off, the cultural pressure to succeed and get a job is even worse than in western countries, many enjoyable things which are legal here are very illegal over here, Japan is one of the few countries to seriously enforce anti-piracy laws so even with the fast download speeds you can't do much with it.

Why would anyone want to live in such a place?

Gambling is illegal, but that probably doesn't really matter is the average person on /jp/. I think the thing that would bother most people on /jp/ is their stance on drug use.

Most of the pharmaceutical drugs that I see /jp/ talk about taking to make themselves feel happy are very, very illegal in Japan and will get you a long prison sentence. Even something like ADHD stimulants, the drugs that are thrown around here like candy to everyone from children to adults, are extremely illegal in Japan. If you live in an area like California or Colorado and you're a NEET that's used to consuming medical cannabis then you're out of luck in Japan since cannabis might as well be heroin in their eyes.

You can drink and you can smoke tobacco, that's it.

Japanese prisons are no Norway either, in many ways they're far more cruel and painful than even American prisons.

Asian countries in general are bad places to live. Their cultures don't seem to mesh naturally with the modern world. Japan's weird pornography censorship laws based upon "indecency" and that incident in China recently are good examples. Everyone in China is using the internet all the time, but they were blocking major sites like google and censoring everything during that leadership switch they were doing.

Something like that would never happen over here. If we lost access to a large portion of the internet for even a day because of political censorship or if all of our porn had to be blurred out then people would be rioting.

I used to want to live in Japan, but then I thought about it seriously. If I did, how would I do it? Would I want a job there? No. Then it obviously isn't going to work out. But further, let's say I was able to live there and not work. What would I do? I'd just sit in my room all day like I do now. I wouldn't go out and do anything. So why bother thinking about living there? I can do whatever I would do there from here in my own country.

I don't understand why people in first world countries talk about moving to other first world countries as if it would actually change their life in any significant way.

The world is so globalized now that where you live doesn't really matter anymore and most first world countries have been westernized to the point that the only notable differences when travelling between first world countries are the different languages, the different tourist attractions, and subtle differences in the laws.

I've always felt an intrinsic connection with the Samurai bushido code and that my soul is deeply connected to the Japanese people and the beautiful land of Japan. Their religions center around peace and their technological achievements dwarf that of any other country. Nowhere else on earth can you be just a train ride away from beautiful natural landscapes to a futuristic city. And don't get me started on their entertainment! When you live in Japan you're never bored. I haven't been yet but I'm planning on going one day...

If you're a socially inept person in the U.S or Europe then you're going to be a socially inept person in Japan too, but Japanese culture is already so introverted that you will have even less of a chance at integrating into society.

How do these foreign weeaboos think they're going to make it when they can barely even make friends back here? Japanese socialization is so clique based that if you didn't grow up there and you didn't already have a network of connections from your childhood, school, and work then even getting people to talk to you will be very difficult. People aren't as open and sociable over there as they are over here.

The end result is that if any of us moves to Japan then we will just be isolated and alone in some apartment, living a lifestyle that's virtually identical to the one we have now but the only difference is that your prison/apartment is now on the other side of the planet.

I think the main difference is that hikikomori in the west are people with severe social anxiety or some other mental ailment while Japanese society takes otherwise normal people, completely crushes their spirit under the weight of the massive amount of societal pressure, and turns them into hikikomori. We're strange anomalies and they're the product of their environment.

It's like those people in the military who just snap. They just weren't cut out for that kind of pressure, but if they hadn't been in the military in the first place then they never would have had a nervous breakdown. The large number of hikikomori in Japan says more about the harshness of their society and the relatively low number of hikikomori in the west is because our culture is fairly carefree and easy-going. Most young people are more concerned with taking it easy and having fun than succeeding, there's not as much pressure so normal western people don't become overwhelmed with shame and lock themselves in their room for years.
