I wonder whether pure mathematics is becoming less and less relevant to anything as time goes on.
This is purely speculation, but I would think that the percentage of pure mathematics research from 1950 that would (at any time in the future) be used in Physics is lower than that of todays research.
I guess that isn't what drives them though; it's mathematics for its own sake, not that there is anything wrong with that.
