I would like a japanese style phone that works in america.

Basically, i want a feature rich clamshell phone, im tired of the modern smartphone design, and apparently in japan they still make everything in clamshell, and they are also high tech phones, so im assuming thats what i want.

Im sure someone here has been pathetic enough to go out of their way to get something like this just so they could be like in one of their japanese animes, so any advice?

I dislike this kind of cell phones they have in animes. It's uncomfortable and unreliable, i would never buy myself one. That's just my opinion, though.

Im 28 so i kind of remember the evolution of phones from huge bricks, up to the early flip phones, into the little bar phones, and finally to smart phones.

I used to have an old fashion flip phone. I was pretty awesome, i remember talking on it just to show off the fact that i had a cell phone, most people didn't back then.

I think clamshell phones are the most comfortable to talk into. And even though i rarely talk instead of text, its still nostalgic and i would enjoy having the opportunity to pull out a phone and flip it open again ;_;

One thing ive noticed is all the phones i see in anime still have numberpads instead of keyboards. Now that i think about how one types japanese characters with a qwerty keyboard, maybe its not much more difficult to use a number pad on a japanese phone.

I deffinitly want a keyboard on my phone, so maybe my desires are impossible ;_;

Hate to say it, but as someone who lives in Japan, EVERYONE has a smartphone now. The only people who have clamshells are basically those who can't afford to upgrade or old people.

Before the smartphone boom around the world, Japan's cell phones were the best, but well.... now it is a completely different story.

iPhones seem to have more popularity here than droid, but there is both.

In a positive way though, since everyone is switching to smartphones, I figure there may be a large surplus of clamshells now.

I am not sure where you could get one honestly, but I heard a little bit ago about Softbank wanting to buy a US carrier? Sprint perhaps? I can't remember off the top of my head, but that would be horribly convenient to have a Softbank sponsored network between countries... and it may give you the opportunity to get yourself a Japanese style clamshell.

Other than that, I am not sure if you could honestly use a Japanese made cellphone outside of Japan, due to different usage of networks/frequencies and such. Perhaps there is a way, but I do not know about it.

Clamshells are still easy (and cheap) to get, though (lots of free phones with a 2-year contract). Unfortunately, most of the features that make them nice (like carrier mail, i-mode, etc.) are carrier-dependent...

You sure can get one, just make sure it's not a 3G-only model (low chances of getting 3G to work) and don't pay more than $100 for it. Don't expect it to work reliably, either. Look for "hypersim" and similar keywords to make it work abroad.

(Also, docomo supposedly started unlocking their models for a fee since last year - perhaps you can get one of those.)

The only two worthwhile flipphones are the 007SH and the sh7218u/sh7228u. They have Android and 3G data.

The 007SH is the fastest, but most expensive unless you manage to hook up with a Chinaman unlocker, and for someone like you it's essentially unrootable. Keep in mind it's full of typical Docomo bloatware.

The sh7218u is slow and old, an uglier SH-01B for the Chinese market. It's popular among weebs. Can be found for less than 200 USD on Taobao.

All other phones are either ancient dumbphones or have no 3G data, so no mobile internet and thus a shit phone in the year of our lord 2012. And don't bother with hypersims. Japs don't use flipphones anymore, as people have stated. The only flips released this season were ones for old people. The 007SH is likely the last good ship to set sail.

You forgot the slider phones. I prefer them to clamshells are they seem a little more robust

Sadly these days the slider seems condemned to low budget pre-paid models only.
I currently own a LG Pure and i love the thing. I regret not buying 10 of them in advance because i fear it may be the last of its kind; A simple, yet good quality phone without any bullshit features tacked on.

You don't want a Japanese phone. The software is all propreitary and the UIs have shitty designs. In the West you are free to choose the best software for the job as opposed to some buggy, poorly designed proprietary shit that runs on an equally piss poor OS.
