It's strange I like 2D but I really don't have a enough will power to sit through anime anymore.

As I find myself speaking to Japanese people more and more (and I probably speak Japanese at a minimum of 5 hours a day, with no English), I find myself not watching anime. Hell, after talking to Japanese people, anime really does seem pretty dull. Bad voices get to me really badly now, bad writing gets to me even worse. It's not so much grown out of it, I find I can't stand a lot of it anymore.

It is more of an on/off kinda thing for me. Sometimes I get the urge and watch like 10 episodes from multiple shows of the current airing season and then suddenly stop doing so until the next season hits.

Most of the time I never even finish em and just stop at 9 or 10. I miss the times when I watched like 5 shows at the same time and actually waited for every episode to air.

I tell this to everyone, but no one ever understands. Basically, your common fansub group has a passion for the source material, or else they wouldn't sub it. You know how hard it is to push out a series? I still translate now, and it bores me. Luckily people pay me. Anyway, your common fansub group will OVEREDIT, and make the Japanese sound better than it really is by far, because they love the show, and that's provided your translator even gets what's going on in the first place. And show you have subs that inaccurately represent what's going on, and sound far better than the show really is. You'll notice groups inserting memes, inserting German when there is none, those sorts of things. Not to mention it takes time to read the subs. Do you know how boring it is when you have no subs to look at and you're just staring at the screen going, "I can predict the next three lines will be a variation of X," and then crying to yourself when you were exactly right word for word, and word for word in Japanese, not even your native fucking language. Yeah, that's gay.

I stopped halfway through the summer season. I tried to get back into it, but I haven't really been able to get into it like I used to. I used to go on /a/ just to know what anime was airing and what they're like, but I can't stand it there.

Generally I'm very picky and I find that shows with lots of story (ie pretentious bullshit) don't keep me interested for a long time.

Actually, I'm half-Japanese. But my mom speaks little to no Japanese. My grandparents speak it fluently (and moved to the US from Japan), and I lived with them while I was young for a few months, at least. I picked up a basic amount, not nearly enough to be fluent, and then taught myself the rest.

You can't really "grow" out of something unless its intended age range/group was set below your current one to begin with

that being said most anime have a wide age range that they expect people to be able to be entertained from, you don't expect a 30-40 year old to sit down and enjoy Doreimon any more than you expect a 6-10 year old to sit down and enjoy Death Note

Also, I use hyperbole in my speech, and don't really think everyone agrees with me, but I still believe there are a lot of people who overrate their ability with Japanese. Take a look at the work a lot of groups put out. Even professional subs are terrible. I went to see the Madoka movie the other day in the US, they had it subbed. And the translations were awful.

Oh, no. That's exactly my point. There could be tons of people in the professional anime translating industry that are half-Japanese, grew up in both the US and Japan, and know tons more Japanese than I do translating this stuff, but there's not.

That leaves mostly people who can't translate very well translating this stuff, and why the US patent office requires natives for their translations, and the anime industry takes in former fansubbers. PhDs of Japanese mean they study grammar and stuff, 99.9% of people I've talked to that went to school and took Japanese are terrible at it. The people who are good studied it on their own (generalization).

I'm glad to admit that my Japanese isn't perfect, too, but also, if you take random Japanese off the street and have them listen to anime, a lot of it they won't understand. The word choice is different, and there's a lot of weird references, and history stuff. Even if you have someone perfectly bilingual, if they're not very educated, translating might be pretty difficult, too.
