Actually, that's how you beat Shou. You're going to be using this strategy with the next boss as well. Or just dodge everything, which is relatively easy on normal. I start by calming myself down and trying to concentrate as much as I can. I adjust the environment and try to bring myself into my Touhou-zen. This sometimes happens after a long time or not at all. Being able to play well is largely based on your mindset, which varies based on the goals that you do. You have to know which moods to avoid and which to seek. This can only be acquired through experience. How hard I play usually depends on my mood. I sometimes play just for the sake of playing, and not to win. Other times, the stars align and I get very motivated. It usually depends on how much free time I have.

That can go for a lot of people. In case you haven't noticed, the channel has lost a lot of activity. Many of our top players have quit, gone inactive, or moved on to greener pastures. I moved away from the channel because I was hurt. I also started to use a trip for that reason. I have seen players come and go, I have seen the channels change, and I have gotten many friends and experiences there. It used to be that all the activity was in the IRC and the threads were deserted, but now it is the opposite. I want the old times back, and I'm hoping that some of the new players will be able to fulfill this.

Since when does "our" imply "mine"?

When I was first invited to #pofv, it was Hearbeam's, dot_asp's, and T's fun house. The former two didn't even speak for the first months that I was there. After that, a lot of new faces started to show up. Most were friends of the owners. That was the golden age of the channel. It started to go downhill after that. I still consider those three to be the true owners of the channel.

I want to play Marisa in SA but all of her attack patterns suck ass.
The first one's stupid because the attack spreads when focused, as opposed to focusing like it should and spreading when unfocused.
The second one's pretty dumb because it does significantly less damage than all the others and switching attacks mid-game is a bitch.
And the third one has too much of a delay. The missiles travel way too slowly to be really useful against anything other than stationary enemies.

Is there a third party patch or something to improve Marisa's suckiness?

>The first one's stupid because the attack spreads when focused, as opposed to focusing like it should and spreading when unfocused.
You just need to get used to it.
>The second one's pretty dumb because it does significantly less damage than all the others and switching attacks mid-game is a bitch.
I think she does a lot of damage. You will be limited to her water shot most of the time, and sometimes her fire shot. Anything else is only for a handful of places and is usually not necessary. She also has a great bomb, except that you need to be close to the boss for it to do any damage.
>And the third one has too much of a delay. The missiles travel way too slowly to be really useful against anything other than stationary enemies.
She doesn't have this problem as much as some of the shots in the other games do. You should try following the enemies and predicting their patterns.
>Is there a third party patch or something to improve Marisa's suckiness?
There is a patch to change MarisaB's attacks with the C button, but I can't think of anything else that is Marisa-specific. Either way, you should be weary about using patches to give yourself an advantage.

You can be new at one point and still be old in the future. When did I go out of my way to invite people to #pofv? I don't think I've ever done it before directly. I just think Reimu A is the least weird since it's pretty much just the forward focus shot type, but the fact that it rolls around is offputting to say the least. I don't mind strange shot types, but it annoys me when every single shot is something I that takes way too long to get used to for no real reward. Okay, now I remember. Yes, this did happen, although they rarely came. I thought that it would be easier to guide someone through a game with the help of IRC, and I wanted to be friendly. Even so, I never told anyone to leave. It doesn't matter to me if someone lurks #pofv or not.

You could also register to the RSS feeds of Royalflare, and visit the western replay archive and scoreboards on a daily basis.

I am doing a combination of these things, and it is working somewhat well. I could also follow some blogs, but I'm too lazy for that. And I guess I'm skipping some information for personal reasons. Maybe there's a better way to keep a track of the things, I don't know too much.

Top Western scores tend to be at least 75% of the world record if it's a game that anyone cares about.

>Western players really can't compete with Japan since they can't actively go out to arcades and copy the best of the best superplayers day in and day out.

Buy or download the superplay DVD and you'll be able to watch the best of the best whenever you want. Or if the game is on the XBox, you can download the top replays from the scoreboards.

This might sound crazy but you can also try figuring some things out on your own. :V

>> No.9898811

>>9898780
When you watch superplay DVDs, you only get the most of the metagame in the time frame in which the DVD was released. People find out new tactics and scoring routes every day. You can't get those unless you physically go out to arcades and tournaments on a daily basis.

Finding out things on yourself is also pretty fun, but how are you supposed to become competent in anything without the help of superplays? :V :V :V Without anybody to teach you, you revert back to peon status. You cannot be a refined scoring warrior unless you learn from others.

/jp/, I have a bit of a quandary. I recently recalled an STG game I played a long time ago by the name of Castle Shikigami II for the US PS2 (Shikigami no Shiro II is the Japanese title, I believe). I know it was produced during the time ZUN was working at Taito, and I vaguely recall a name similar to his real one popping up in the credits, but I can't seem to find anything on the credits for that game (or even the first one) to verify it. >> No.9905947

I previously thought that Touhou was a test of reaction and dexterity, but I'm starting to think that it's more about concentration and focus. Perhaps it varies with goals and skill levels? All of my LNBNV runs feel more like a mind game than a bullet-dodging one. I have been attempting these runs for close to a year and it is starting to take a toll. SanaeB makes the first four stages very difficult. It seems like she is very unbalanced towards LNBNV. Being a jerk isn't exactly a bad thing, it's not like they can help it. Perhaps they're only jerks to the people they don't personally know, or maybe they're only friendly to people who are at a certain skill level. But in any case, this shit is stupid.

I had to reformat recently so I have to reinstall the games (didn't back them up like the idiot I am). I've got TD installed, but I'm having trouble getting the 1.00c patch installed. Since both installers simply have the text as question marks for me, I have no idea what the 1.00c patch installer is trying to say. I have to give it a directory, and I give it the game directory, but it comes up with only this.

Thanks in advance.

MoF will give you really bad bomb habits. IN will give you bad deathbombing habits, but that's just about it.

I'd actually recommend starting with EoSD or PCB, really. They both give a shitload of bombs and lives, but can still manage to be challenging for a beginner. IN is great for people who like to micro-memorize everything because it has spell practice. Also good for people who only have five minutes of free time a day. I'm bad at these games though, so take this with a grain of salt.

After my DS clear (not 100%, just the clear screen), I've managed to hoard enough resources to XXC my way through TD Hard.
I can feel my improvement, before Extra stage looked rather hopeless, but after my first decent try past the stage I got to Seventh Duel on Mamizou, only 3 spellcards after that.

In games that use C, I use my index finger, although I don't feel comfortable with that.
For the arrow keys, I have my index on left, ring on right, and my middle switching between the vertical keys.

I've been pondering whether I should get or make a keyboard that has the directional keys in a straight line. This would mean that I wouldn't have to constantly switch my middle finger, but it might be awkward hard to get used to, and not worth the trouble.

SanaeB LNBNV is not going well at the moment.

Although I haven't spent an extreme amount of time on SanaeB, she feels like the hardest shot I have played so far. She is good at the later stages, but the early ones are much harder with her. I could skip her and do MarisaA/B, but then I would have to relearn a lot of strategy and get used to the different controls. Sanae's dodging abilities are still fresh in my mind, and I will have to do her eventually to get 6/6 shots.

The sheer amount of time that I have spent on this goal is starting to take its toll, but I'm not about to give up after I have come this far. I know where I stand, and I know what I need to do to beat this game, but I'm still in a tough spot.
