Not sure, but I know I played Yume Nikki in 2008 as /jp/ insisted it was a great game. I liked the idea, but the game felt very pointless and I got bored of it rather quickly.

Fortunately in 2012 a much more obscure game came along that took the best elements of Yume Nikki and was actually interesting to play until the end.

Hell, we had tons of Mother 3 threads way before it was translated, it used to be one of /v/'s favorite games. I beat it myself not knowing a word of Japanese and only using a guide and it was every bit as emotional as the time I beat the translated version. I really miss those days.

That's actually one of the many theories behind her. The major thing I love about this game is it's able to say so much about a person via her dreams without spelling anything out. It's not a "game" in the typical sense but more of an experience.

.flow is a much darker variation of Yume Nikki. Most if not all interpretations of the story is hellaciously dark and what little music there is reflects that. There are multiple endings, each one more depressing than the last.

I recommend it.

Like Yume Nikki, you wander around in surreal environments and there's no goal except to collect stuff and explore everything. Contrary to Yume Nikki, the world feels like it has a coherent structure (despite different areas often being nothing alike) and you quickly learn how to get to various points. There are obvious blockades in the road which you can pass by taking on specific forms (which you transform into once you touch them, you don't carry them around like Yume Nikki's skills). The aim of the game is to find the three eggs and bring them to the starting point. There's also an additional challenge to find the three squiggly things.
