Loomis wrote a book called "Drawing the Head and Hands". ZUN is probably way too stubborn to read it. I know this sounds really entitled, but I'm offended that he puts such an absurd amount of effort into everything else, than draws the characters so poorly. It's an insult to his own creation.

If Zun's art improved, nobody would have any incentive to draw better art and so there would be no more cool fan-made touhou art and certainly no videos, games, or memes.

Actually, if you look at the amount of art Zun had drawn for the series, unless he has been sketching a tremendous amount that we aren't seeing, he isn't drawing enough to really improve.

You don't just improve from doing 6 portraits a year.

It's because he's drunk as fuck when he draws.

It's said that he draws all of the characters for a game in one night. He is so sloshed that he remembers none of it and when he wakes up next morning to find all the characters already programed in, even he is surprised by the results.

Because if he drew them well it would make all other artists work a problem.

It would block any other alternatives to a greater extent.
