Question about anime screencaps:
Are you guys all from /a/? I don't doubt most of /jp/ still watches anime, but why with subtitles?

I can't read Japanese, but I can watch anime without subtitles, just from having watched anime.

I am from /jp/ if that answers your question.

Anime is part of otaku culture, this board was split from /a/, only a few try hards need to keep adamantly stating that they don't watch anime.

I don't know enough Japanese to watch raws, and reading it is far easier to comprehend than when the language is spoken to me.

The idea that the majority of /jp/ can speak Japanese is just as much a myth as the idea that /jp/ is full of oldfags.

I watch anime and discuss it when I have the chance with other people in /jp/

Most of the time it's just spam that I promptly report. A textless screencap thread is no good

I can understand most spoken dialogue, but I like to have something to fall back on.

I also need subs for kanji heavy signs.

Hey, I'm not saying anything about you guys WATCHING anime. I even said in my post most /jp/ers do. I also understand that people who can read/write Japanese are in the minority. But you guys are in your twenties. After ~10 years of watching anime, you can't understand the language without subtitles?

I don't think you'll ever develop a comprehension good enough to understand the language at an abstract level by just watching anime. You'll learn some stock phases and words that are prominent in anime, but that's it. If you want to actually learn you need to read.

Maybe if it was spanish or something closer to english that could be, but japanese sentance structure is so different and subtitles are usually non-literal and changed a bit so they make sense in english, so learning the whole language fluently not exactly that easy.

Have you ever looked at the difference in quality between raws and fansubbing encodes?

I will never, ever download a raw for something that has a release with subs even if I would understand it 100% fine without subs.
