9417705 No.9417705 [Reply] [Original]

Just finished Kanji in Mangaland 2 and am kind of unsure how to proceed about learning Kanji.
I have tried Kanjidamage and was very disappointed before, does anyone know any other method which is similar to Kanji in Mangaland?

I will ask for your forgiveness if you get a dozen threads like this daily.

>> No.9417717

kanji damage is entertaining as HELL. the mnemonics made me know more than 100 kanji.

>> No.9417776

>>9417717
The mnemonic approach is great, that is why I like Kanji in Mangaland so much, and I also started out with Kanjidamage, but quickly realized it has some problems. It doesn't give me all the meanings and readings of kanji, suggests very few Jukugo and has no examples or practice so I can see how the kanji are actually used... Another problem is the order in which the Kanji are presented, because it's built 100% on radicals and components and does not bother with when the Kanji are normally taught in the Japanese school system or JLPT, nor with the semantic fields, it means you can't get to reading until you are done with the whole thing.

Consider that I only learned 640 Kanji from the two Kanji in Mangaland books, but I can already handle some manga and light novels even without furigana (Azumanga Daioh, HIdamari Sketch, Kino no Tabi...)

>I have tried Kanjidamage and was very disappointed before

Why? It took me 3 months to grind all 1760 kanji off kanjidamage, studying 6-8 hours a day, doing 20 kanji every day, with doing rereviews as much as possible of all the kanji learned to make sure of retention.

After I was done I did grammar for a while and then proceeded to play simple moege/eroge with jparser which I used when needed.

Vocab was never really that much of a problem for me, having seen 230+ days of anime, you could say I picked up alot. Whenever I encountered jukugo that didn't use the usual way of reading it, or when I simply didn't know what it meant, I just added it to my anki deck.

It's nothing really, I was pretty much done with the 20 kanji within 1-2 hours at most. It's grinding them from 1-XXXX that took me 6-8 hours.

>> No.9419892

I just found a list of kanji somewhere and memorized as many as I could every day. But this method is probably a little too dull for most people.

>> No.9419966

I bought like 6 or 7 manga from book-off and read them next to a computer, everytime I came acrossed a kanji I didn't know I wrote into into IME and then studied it until I got it. That doesn't mean I memorized them, but I do feel like I atleast bolstered my already known(about 300) by about 300 more in the past month or so. I feel pretty good about that, since I'm not going out of my way to do it and I am having fun at the same time.

I thin k>>9417776 lays out the problems with kanjidamage.
It could be a great tool for someone who is already 6th grade level though, since you can read while studying, and have enough knowledge to properly use tools like Jisho to better understand the context in which the kanji are used.

If I knew I wouldn't have opened this thread, Kani in Mangaland worked really well for me, uses mnemonics and drawings like Kanjidamage to help you learn kanji, offers lots of Jukugo, has exercises, and goes by grade school order, which means you can get into reading really quickly. Sadly, it only goes up to 4th grade (640 kanji) as the third book hasn't been released yet, which means I too am still looking for an alternative.

>> No.9420755

>>9420746
Maybe Heisig would work? Or just straight up drawing kanji.

>> No.9420769

>>9420755
I hate Heisig, you don't learn reading, jukugo, context, or anything really, it's like trying to fool yourself by giving each drawing a word in English.
I am probably going to just go with Kanjidamage with japanese grade order while checking everything in Jisho, as I see no other good alternative.

It's not a bad idea. I actually do that, but most of the times I just look up the meaning on kanji damage.

While I'm here, I'm recommending the manga of Jinrui Suitai wa Shimashita as reading material - it's mostly written in hiragana and ALL of the kanji have furigana, so it's not very difficult. And it's also a really good manga as well; it's written by Romeo Takahashi.
