'Serious' novel stories are boring and predictable, using the exact same elements even more than other forms of storytelling. Their merit is determined almost solely by their writing, with plot and characters existing only as extras.

Light novels use the form of 'real' novels, but use it to actually tell a story the reader can lose himself in, rather than just presenting poetry in story form. They avoid overly elaborate phrasings and long descriptions in favor of a wording that's easier to read (and thus conveys the story more directly).

Simply put, if you want to read 'good writing', read a novel. If you want to read an actual story, read a light novel.

No. Manga is a mature medium with a broad and rich history that can stand on its own when compared to European or American comic books and novels.

Light novels are a a literary dead end with few worthwhile representatives it has suffering from having to conform to the constraints of the medium, and instead of maturing it's devolving into a parody of itself.
