Serious Gensokyo is my favourite! It feels very realistic and it's a lot more interesting that Gensokyo that feels like Outside World but with Youkai.

I don't like most of this stuff. What I love most about Touhou is its fairytale-like stories. It's just so charmingly innocent and reminds me of my childhood.

Serious Gensokyo recommendations anyone?

I started playing games long before I really got into fanbase
I used to think it's all edgy and grimdark.

How could anyone think it's edgy and grimdark at any time? All the characters are little girls (well, ZUN draws them all as if they're 10 years old, with rare exceptions like Yuugi), all they do is bicker for a bit and then fight, and hell, half the fights are justified by "Well, they're here and talking to me, so I might as well beat them up!"

Some people can't take a character seriously if it;s a little girl. I'm not one of these people.

And the dialogs can easily be read as something witty and sarcastic.
also, they threaten to kill each other almost every fight

and some of the backgrounds can be considered rather...disturbing

The fairy tales from my childhood were HP Lovecraft, Hammer movies, Carpenter and anime like Shingen Youkai Bem, Devilman, Ogon Bat and Genocyber.
its only normal for me trying to see everything under a certain light. what i don't understand is the Dark/Emo combo. If it have monsters, fog and liters of blood it doesn't mean that is depressing, or that I cry internally for the fate of man.
for that there's Kafka and Baudelaire.

It's still all the time innocent like a fairy-tale. In Hansel and Gretel the children are abandoned and threatened to be cooked and eaten. In Red Riding Hood, the wolf eats the grandmother and later his fucking guts are cut open.
This all sounds like some dark psycho nightmare, but it's all about the presentation.

Happy and peacefull gensokyo is canon,(and personaly it's why i like this universe). But i must admit, with all the youkai and legends Zun took inspiration, it make a pretty good material for more dark and serious setting and story.

I'm trying to remember the name of a doujin I read a long time ago, before I knew the source material, and it was a fight between Youmu and Yukari with a very grimdark and serious feel. It was what inspired me to find out the source material.

I don't know about grimdark, but youkai-like youkai I like.
