If you're an aspie then you aren't very social and you keep to yourself. That means lots of free time to spend on whatever and so most of the time you end up staying inside and learning about things while everyone else is busy talking to each other.

Intelligence != knowledge

Aspergers is the most misunderstood mental condition. "High functioning" does not mean intelligence, the term high is used to relate to other kinds of autism, the average IQ of people with Aspergers is the same as that of the rest of the population.

Now couple the fact that aspies get obsessed with things and can spend their entire life in one narrow area, with the fact that some of them ARE intelligent, you get people who actually advance a field or produce something useful.

There people are extremely rare, because even those very intelligent that have Aspergers don't actually do anything useful, even if they get interested in something like chemistry, they won't have the capacity or creativity to come up with any new theories, they'll just spend their days thinking about, say, the structure of organic compounds, and memorising that shit.
