Except she has an actual food source of her own, her garden which she uses to make tea, sake and other foods and a nearby river from where she fishes.

Her sole purpose in life according to Akyuu is to expand the shrine's grounds in order to attract followers due to it being too close to the nasty youkai-filled forest. Akyuu also says she's the only Hakurei to have ever gotten a donation and actually worked to help the shrine clean.
