It is a hideout for the forgotten. Basically, what has no place in the world ends up there. We (most of /jp/) feel disconnected to the world, so it's only natural that places like that attract our attention. Not to mention the magic and little girls. Hell, their technology is even more advanced than ours. It has everything that a /jp/er could ever want: Normalfags can't enter, little girls are everywhere, you yourself can become the little girl and perform fancy magic. What if you die? Then you can still go to the Netherworld and back to Gensokyo from there.

The appeal of gensokyo as I see it is a world not only with amazement adventure and magic, as well, a world where nobody, even the worst there, is really shit as a person. The real world being a grim contrast. Id probably think I wasnt worthy if I ended up in gensokyo, and id be a shy girl living in some shack in a forest trying not to bother anyone. Id spend alot of time in nature.
