/jp/ has discussed this game before, a rather long, difficult touhou rpg, translated. Awhile ago it received some updates that greatly improved stability and performance, the game was rather crashy with the English patch before these patches, so it's worth updating.

The whole game prepatched with the translation and game manual (5 parts)
http://www.mediafire.com/?a8c1by6btaid7

If you already have the game it's most likely at version 2.06. You can get the 2.07 and 2.08 patches here: http://www.gensoukyou.org/bose02/game02/update.html
and the 2.09 patch here http://www.gensoukyou.org/bose02/update.html
After updating to 2.09 the game task bar will still read 2.08 for some reason.
The english files to copy over for 2.09 http://www.mediafire.com/?hwfe9kaur3d08c3
If you updated your game you'll need to run the exe in your save folder to convert your saved games to work with the new engine.

>> No.8704502

Geez, did the game always run this fast? By that I mean, did your character always run this fast?

Also, is there a drop/learning rate patch for this version yet?

I like that game but it has some major bullshit, like new characters joining your party at level 1 even if everyone else is level 80 and random boss A.I. that sometimes just decides to spam it's strongest move and party wide dispel again and again. Still a fun game.

>> No.8704537

The update made your character run by default so you wouldn't be holding the run button the entire game.

No, I meant it feels like your character moves faster. I don't like it.

>> No.8704562

If you're annoyed by the "2.08" in the title after updating, you can just change it manually in the system.ini.
Now, after updating to 2.09, fullscreen mode stretches the picture. Any way to solve this? 2.06 stayed at 4:3, and every other application too.
Well, I ragequit months ago at Yuuka's stage anyways, but I'd like a solution to the problem.

Do the newest patches really fix all that crashing? You always have to wonder when it will crash again and to make matters worse it likes to crash after boss battles and before you can save. It even crashed right at the end of the epilogue, though it still saved that time. I thought i had to fight the final boss again...

>> No.8704637

>>8704580

In all the time I've played since the update (around stage 16 through about half of the post-game content), it hasn't crashed a single time, and it's not running in compatibility mode. You're probably safe.

>> No.8704639

>>8704580
The updates allowed me to do things that would always crash unless I was in 95 compatibility. It seems to follow that crashes that didn't always happen while 95 compat was on have gone away. Obviously it's a game so it might crash, but it seems like it's far far less likely to at the least.

I was kidding, I said Aya because neither Alice nor Mokou are sluts.
But she's good in random encounters because of her Illusionary Dominance and Favorable Wind (Reflect Breath). Also, in a few fights like against a Hydra she's golden - reduce the enemies accuracy, buff your evasion and never get hit.

What's the learning curve like for this game ?

>> No.8706379

>>8706353
You'll want to read the manual to learn about land effects, the resistance symbols and how shields work. Bosses tend to be beaten with strategy/exploiting a weakness, rather than just grinding and beating on them. The stages themselves switch from being rather easy to being almost unfairly hard. Even the easy stages can have specific mobs that are hard to deal with. You often need to go overboard with counters in order to deal with tough situations. I've had to equip old/weaker number wise equipment for their effects/elements in order to win battles.

Sticking with the same party members (you'll want to level everyone) is a bad idea. In most rpgs I've been able to stick with a certain team and beat everything, this is not the case of GoS.

The only real grinding is for Satori's blue magic learning, and for some materials. The game is very long and will frustrate you at times, but fun.

Okay, I'm pretty awful at jRPGs in general and am sorta derping my way around, got to the end of Stage 2 but can't beat the boss fight quite yet.

Potential reason: I haven't invested a single POW point on any character, because I don't wanna fuck up.

Currently using Trickster, reimu fronting, marisa in back, reimu has a short sword, aya has a javelin, sanae doesn't do shit for damage and is healbotting, marisa just casts spells at anything that moves. I'm indecisive about investing into weapon trees since I half-expect the game to get so hard you're fucked if you're not using signature weapons, and I dunno if there's a max level or anything where I'd suddenly find myself stuck with worthless characters who can't be fixed.

Are stat increases from levels completely random or are they based on actions taken/positions taken in formations? it seems like Reimu is getting lots of Vit and Marisa is just getting loads of Int but I couldn't find information on whether that's just because of who they are, or if how I use them influences it as well.

I think it varies based on character. I don't think you can screw up levels by having characters in bad positions or anything.
The only way you can screw yourself up is if you synthesis recklessly. Materials are scarce and stay that way throughout the game. That doesn't mean you shouldn't synthesize at all, just that you should be careful. Does Sakuya really need a new two-handed sword? Is Patchy really going to do that much better with a book than with a staff?

>> No.8713656

And another thing; leave dungeons often. Whenever you find a shortcut or get a rare drop (like a material), turn around, leave, and head back to the shrine for healing. This is because any items you pick up in a dungeon aren't actually added to your inventory until you get back to the world map; and if you die, you lose them. Any stuff from chests will go back to where you found it, but stuff dropped by enemies is gone for good unless they drop it again latter on.
Backtracking is annoying, but it's nowhere near as bad as dying late in a dungeon and losing all your stuff.

Also, two noteworthy things about it:
- If you chase a multi-hit attack (Nitori learns sword/lance/axe/everything chanser later on), Nitori will hit the same amount of times with her chaser. So, for example, Sakuya uses knifespam and hits 3 times, Nitori chases it and hits 3 times.
- If Nitori chases an attack from someone who can attack twice in a turn (like Marisa with enough points in her magic growth tree, Sakuya, Youmu, Mokou, etc), that someone will never strike twice that turn. I think there's a video proving this on YouTube but I don't remember its title or whatever.

Also, something about Satori that I somehow missed is how her personal weapons (eyes) don't boost the damage of a certain element, but instead work just like the somewhat elemental weapons in this game (so, they get their damage and then do a percentage of that element using the element, which might even deal extra or no damage at all).
Not sure if it's obvious and I was just too retarded to notice, but eh.

>>8725078
Youmu is sort of low tier for regular encounters in that if you set your party up for quick nuking, she'll be outpaced as long as you can kill everything in the first turn.

In the later stages it becomes near impossible for that to happen however which is when she really starts to shine. That and bosses. Basically her stance skills can do some ridiculous damage, but you have to waste a turn to get into a stance in the first place. They also have somewhat long cooldowns generally as well so you might not get to use her best skills more than once in a single fight depending on how long it lasts.

Basically the longer a fight lasts, the more you notice Youmu's damage. Also, things with divine barrier are the foreign gods. You see those somewhat rare Angelic and Demonic enemies that appear alone or with each other usually? Those are Foreign Gods. They become incredibly threatening late in the game, but so does everything else really. They do shitloads of damage and take nearly none in return most of the time. In the lategame, you'll pretty much be relying on Youmu to take them out in any manner that resembles speed.

Also Sakuya's signature weapon is knives, but those are a generic weapon in this game so her signature weapon with unique skill tree became 2 handed swords. Generic weapons are pretty shit tier in general besides axes, staves and Kusanagi. Sakuya is the other damage dealer in the game, her specialty is that all of her swords have a different type of slayer. Which is befitting for a hunter type person. Certain swords of hers can help massively with bosses like her 2nd tier sword against Tenshi.

Generally, the most popular weapons to craft during a regular playthrough are Nitori's, Youmu's, Sakuya's, and Mokou's. All the mages do better with staves generally and Patchouli is just better off with axes if you're going melee with her.

However the first boss that would possibly present this problem is Satori due to the fact she has land healing for most of the battle and a full heal whenever she goes water mode.

Looking at her skill list as a boss it's a wonder why she joins the party with none of those spells she had when fighting you.

Well I've completely exterminated every mob in the Gorgon Barrier again after having done it months ago to grind my characters into the 60s from low 50s. Still haven't encountered the rare tree monster and final Devil Minotaur. I've managed to beat every other rare mob except for Crom Camugh and Marisa Madura.

A very good party for Gorgon Barrier grinding seems to be Alice, Mokou, Youmu, Satori(with starlight barrier and refresh), and Marisa(replaceable I guess).

It seems capable of taking on every single regular possible mob encounter with ease in the Gorgon Barrier. And I tried a lot of party compositions when I was still trying to level everything evenly. Going little legion first turn and starlight barriering and hourai doll second turn is a lot safer than just using hourai doll first turn. Can't be screwed over by first turn evolution breaths or mind blasts. I've gotten every normal mob equipment drop besides for high ribbon and plasma knife.

Time to take on the Gorgon sisters again with a party in the 60-70 range now after months of not playing.

The only boss in the game that's forced me to grind is the final one strangely enough. Managed to beat Lithos in the low 50s and I was getting triple experience from stuff in the Barrier back then. Let's see if I can win and finally move on to the post-game stuff then after that DoD when it gets translated.

That katana worked for me, should work for you. Honestly, how the hell would anybody even have enough iron for kusanagi by the final boss? Both Sakuya's and Youmu's weapon trees use them and they're quite possibly the best weapon trees.

I basically followed the wiki's strategy on beating the final boss. Spec Mokou and Youmu for as much damage as possible. Use Aya to dodgetank the first form with Satori and Reimu supporting. I decided to give Marisa purely fire and electric spells and gave Satori a single target fire spell instead of ice spell purely to build up fire land to help Mokou's Fujiyama Volcanoes. Also opted for plasma ball instead of thunderclap as well since you can't even use thunderclap if you're casting starlight barriers. I gave Mokou both fire amulets, Shuten-Douji's Bracer, another damage accessory, salamander breastplate and the one-hit fist. I set her power for damage, bombs, and decreasing cooldown for continuous Fujiyamas on Lithos. If you do the first form right you can take it out in about 3 sister loops. Faster if Mokou procs double hit with her Fujiyamas.

For the second form, use any Fujiyamas Mokou has left then switch to the next party. You want to buff Youmu like a fucker as she's your main damage dealer. I equipped her with Doujigiri, Demon Shield, one of her personal armors, better damage accessories including a rage choker IV I crafted and a ribbon. As long as you use Alice right which you should know how to with how much you probably used her throughout the game, you should have little trouble with the second and last form as long as the sisters don't dispel Youmu. With Amplifying Scroll, Wind of Swords, and Dark Sword she will do damage as seen in my earlier screenshot.

Yeah, once you get into the dynamic of trying to win every fight as quickly as possible, you're a step into how this game works. Either that or using Alice.

Basically, you're eventually going to reach a point where nearly every encounter is capable of fucking you up. So you have to fuck up the enemies before they fuck you up. It also doesn't help that the majority of your team is comparable to a wet paper bag. You'll eventually come to love Alice as she pretty much makes all party compositions workable to a point. She's also pretty much necessary for a large portion of bossfights as well. Don't ever expect her to be doing any damage though. She has a damage tree, but I'm not sure if anybody actually uses it. Some people also get her boots with daze on them and give her the multi hit attack so she can try to daze enemies whenever she has the time to.

She is incredibly tanky with the right equips. She can manage to survive things that would take out party members at 1/5 strength which she frequently does if you little legion against breath attacks a lot. She even managed to survive an evolution breath meant for the whole party while I was grinding for the final boss. It's kind of funny if you imagine some of the battles Alice has in a form different than what you see. Like a giant or oni using one of its super attacks which OHKO other team members on her while she just goes nope at them with Holland Dolls. It's kind of ridiculous.

>> No.8733846

Well, trying to defeat Marisa and Alice by beating Alice first didn't work out for me since I could never keep Marisa silenced and didn't have any decent damage options for Alice. Then I decided to try beating Marisa first.

I killed Marisa, but the only surviving parties were Mokou and Aya and then soon only Mokou. Then I had Mokou cast XuFu on herself.

This turned the battle into a long drawn out event where Alice uses Kamikaze dolls and kills everyone, but Mokou and occasionally Aya, but then only Mokou again. Then Mokou after several more Kamikaze Dolls or so gets her last word and resurrects everybody. Who may or may not do a bit of damage depending on if Alice Kamikaze Dolls, Alice Guards, or neither of those two options. She likes doing the first two options a lot.

Everybody had died and been resurrected like four times now except for Mokou.

I never did craft any of Sanae or Satori's weapons. Thing is I'm in post game and counting up the crafting costs, I've acquired a total of 25 iron throughout the game. Even if I had never crafted a single weapon using iron, I would have still needed to farm 5 more pieces of iron.

Also going through the JP wiki, it is only possible to find 12 or 13(wasn't paying enough attention while counting) iron before the final boss in chests.

How the hell does anybody have the iron for kusanagi upon reaching the final boss the first time around?

Guess it might be possible now due to the drop rate patch though. I played up to the final boss before that came around.

Wow, what the hell. Everyone died and got resurrected enough times to run out of lives? That's the first time I've seen that.

Sakuya has that delicious +90 PATK and -2 slash resistance on her 2-handed sword growth tree (and their slayer bonuses are stronger as well), and Youmu has double attack, +33% crit damage and something else on her Katana tree, I believe, so I would really rather use those. The tree for swords isn't really that bad, though, but I would rather not try that hard to save Iron for it through the game.

Sanae's snakes are pretty useful for causing poison or paralysis, and one of her final ones gives her +50% healing, so you would be crazy to not care about at least that one. As for Satori, all you need are her eyes that give extra poison damage.

Sanae doesn't really need help in the healing department honestly. Reimu does, but not Sanae, her late game single target heal pretty much heals for like 1k and her party heals are already pretty decent. Frankly I depend on Alice to keep the party from getting damaged over keeping the party healed up. Since the entire party goes back to full HP after the end of a battle as well, there's not that much need to heal besides boss fights and if Alice is tanking right then not much healing is needed even then.

Also never crafted a Satori Eye once. None of them seemed particularly helpful in the casting department as I mainly used Satori as another elemental caster and occasionally as support. I assume the eyes would be rather helpful if I tried to build Satori around using enemy melee skills though.

I transformed 13 other mats into irons. Zero fucks given.
New thread, perhaps?
