Why does everyone on /jp/ act like they have autism?

I met a kid with autism once and he could barely talk, his mood would swing about randomly, and he had crazy retard strength. Are any of you actually autistic? You just seem shy and socially inept.

this

it's called "autism spectrum disorder" for a reason

that reason being, it's not one neurological illness, it's many

autism varies quite a bit from autistic to autistic

the kind you see with most people on /jp/ is Aspergers, by the way

and the kind people like Chris-chan have is "high functioning" autism

It's just a buzzword, OP.

Shitposters love to use it for everything because they think something that was trendy on /v/ like 2 years ago is still edgy to use today. Only goes to show what useless posters they are.

Kids I've seen with autism basically cannot talk at all, they babble in some incoherent .. I don't know, babytalk? They also tend to just sit and rock in a corner and do things like smear their shit on the windows.

Autism is caused by chromosomal inversion mutations involving neural proteins (or so we think), so it makes sense that different sites of flipping will affect people differently. The difference is because some regions of the genome are expressed more (promoted) and others are silenced (insulated), so switching the places of proteins results in some that weren't supposed to get used much winding up getting made all the time, and under-expression of other ones. There's a few spots where DNA is much more more likely to recombine/"tangle" on itself during meiosis, which is why autistic kids tend to exhibit the same kinds of symptoms.

An actually autistic kid who could talk and form coherent arguments with normal people, even online, would be a miracle. For the record I think of Chris-chan as much more as asperger's than autistic. Not to mention I think shrinks misdiagnose these things all the time because they just go on descriptions of symptoms; I think there should be mandatory genetic tests to confirm it so that they can also see where in the genome the problem occurred, so we can go on to establish different sub-forms of autism and perhaps diagnose them differently, rather than just lump a wide variety of mutations under the umbrella term autism.

Then:
* All continents' names end with the same letter they begin with.
* All continents' names begin with 'A' except for Europe.

Gee, because that's possible. Thank you for you insightful thoughts, I'm sure medical science never considered this!

Not like this debate has been going on for a few decades now. I'm sure the world's leading psychiatrists would love to hear your theories on how we should divide up the autistic spectrum.

A reproducible test demonstrating actual evidence of a genetic anomaly, to properly diagnose a genetic disease? That makes absolute sense.

The real issue is that it costs a lot to sequence someone's genome at the moment. Well, in a few years it'll cost under $1000 to do it, maybe a decade from now it'll be even under $500 or something, as more and better high-throughput sequencers come to market. Currently Illumina sequencers can sequence multiple entire human genomes in just one run, but it costs like $14,000 to run one complete cycle of it (and also takes 2 weeks). The so-called $1000-genome is a holy grail benchmark of biotech at the moment, actually.

So what I'm saying is, it's not very practical right now due to cost, but in the near future it'll be a very sensible option for suspected genetic anomalies. I'm guessing within 50 years it'll be a mandatory thing done for babies born at hospitals. Probably not even 20 years, actually.

Yes, it is absolutely possible, it just costs $15-25,000 to do it right now. As I just said in the other post above, soon it'll be very affordable (as far as medical procedures go) to sequence.

Once you have the sequence it'll be real easy to see what happened. As in you run it through a database and it'll point out a major anomaly (compared to other peoples' genomes) in <1 minute.

What I'm thinking is eventually, after sequencing a lot of autistic kids' genomes, we might be able to match up certain symptoms to certain mutations, so we can start to actually define the spectrum in clearer terms.

>> No.8394430

>>8394416
That's not all of the trouble we're speaking of. Even if we did lower the cost to genome mapping, it would not suffice. Do you have any idea of the number of people working on genome projects today? Compared to the DNA, the number of genes known by us and their use is still very limited, you can't just point out a chromossome and say "See this? That probably leads to autism". Mutations could practically lead to anything.

>> No.8394474

>>8394430
Incidentally, I work with genomes myself. This is something I very much don't want to discuss further here because you know, work is anathema to /jp/. Granted I work with plasmodia and toxoplasma, but still I'm stuck looking at alignments all day long enough to know, that you don't need to know what a gene does to try to map some kind of correlation between disease states. Detection of an autistic trait should in theory be as simple as observing two huge chunk of genome out of order on an alignment, because that's what inversions look like. Smaller mutations of regular genetic drift, such as SNPs and ala chains, won't look anything like that.

Also granted though, that just knowing what inversions cause what flavors of autism won't help in the slightest to cure it, just categorize it, and help eliminate the major problem of misdiagnosis it has today. If autism wasn't so easy to misdiagnose, who knows, maybe it would stop being a retarded shitposter buzzword on /jp/.

No, it's nothing related to my work, it's just that it'd be really nice to have mouthbreathers stop misusing the word. Especially here.

It's a small bit of a long list of grievances that I have with the general public being very un-scientific in nature. Fyi, yes, I am in America, so pretty much I can't talk about my work in public without some moron questioning evolution or genetics etc. Not that I'd even want to, our culture actually demonizes much of science instead of promoting it, or rather criticizes it everywhere that it intersects with religion, which my specialty puts me square in the crossfire of. Politics make my blood boil as well due to the religious factor overshadowing everything. Secular state my ass. I just fucking hate this country, I'll move in an instant if some other nation greatly surpasses our scientific output.
