I was in Akihabara yesterday and spent about $80 USD on my first figure. I felt like I just took my first step into a dangerous world from which there is no escape. God help me.

How do you fuckers justify spending as much on these little dolls as other people spend on cars and houses?

>> No.8359798

Well everything in moderation right?

There are obviously people who have collections totaling values well into 5 digits, but a lot of people only buy a couple figurines for characters they really like.

I generally only buy about 1-3 figurines per year, it all depends on how much you like a figurine.

Anyways good choice with the Sora figurine, $80 isn't bad for that type of quality.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Most are a one time run. Basically, if you see one for preorder you want, if you don't pre-order it or buy it RIGHT when it comes out you will either never get it or pay 3x the price for it. Mandrake is a good store for buying older figures (you have to use japanese words not english words). Amiami is the preferred site for new figs although there are others like HLJ, amiami usually has the lowest prices.

So by buying ones that are already out, you usually have to pay a fair bit more than what it cost when it came out. Granted this was purchased in Akihabara and the series as a whole isn't that popular (and the fig doesn't look too good to others of the same character), the price you had to pay wasn't a significantly larger price then when it came out in may.
