Just wondering for those of you who read VNs in japanese, if you find your writing and speaking getting pretty good without practicing or talking to people. I enjoy playing VNs in japanese but find writing and talking a pain in the ass. Would like to know if you read enough, if its not necessary to train those skills. Hear rumors of people doing so through input, but most the world seems to take the stance that you will never get at writing or talking without doing so alot. Asking because I can read decently and get by with a lot of mistakes in reading and talking, but have not once wrote or spoke to anyone really. By the time you learn enough to read a difficult game or novel, I cant see why your writing and speaking levels would increase and be fairly good as well, without doing a thing besides reading.

>> No.8362652

>>8362625
I've had like, what, 7 or 8 years of english classes at least in my life and I still don't have confidence in my speaking ability.
Writing is alright I guess, but I've been doing that for at least 10 years, too.
In other words, no, I don't expect to be able to speak well in japanese anytime soon, I don't have the need to either, though.

>> No.8362658

Are you saying you have to think about what you write before you write it, which you cant do while talking?

>> No.8362660

>>8362625
>but most the world seems to take the stance that you will never get at writing or talking without doing so alot

The only decent way to get any good at speaking a language is to live in a country that speaks it.

>> No.8362667

>>8362625
language is not some uniformed skill block, being good at reading might broaden your vocabulary or grammar forms, which in turn might help when you're forming sentences, but the only way to get good at speaking is actually speak. I know plenty of people who have uneven skills and while they have great reading comprehension at any given language, they suck at speaking/composition.

>> No.8362668

>>8362625
It would take a shit load of reading to get any good at writing/speaking. You're only practicing recognition, not recall.

>> No.8362669

>>8362625
You only get good at stuff that you actually practice, so, for example, if you read a lot you will eventually learn to read faster. But no way in hell your writing/speaking skills will level up with zero practice, just as a side-effect of your reading.

>> No.8362693

>>8362658
Well, for one, yes, I had to look up a word while writing that post (it did pop up in japanese, though..), so having time to think about what you're wanting to say is definitely a plus, that's also the same for me in my mother tongue, though.

My english teacher back then used to always talk about "active" and "passive" vocabulary/memory.
Basically, if you read a word, you only need to know it in your passive vocab to know what it means, if you want to say something though, you need to take it out from your active vocabulary.
The passive part tends to be much bigger (not only for foreign languages) because it feels naturally by understanding words, the active part is much harder to fill. At times it may feel like they're two different pools altogether.
So, yeah, like everyone else has been saying, if you don't prctice talking you're not going to get good at talking.
I hope this made sense, in some way. It does to me, at least.

I think it's safe to assume that Michiru is the greatest character of all time
Also it's some of the best voice acting I've seen in eroge

The twists in forest make you want to re read it afterwards.

She's the ultimate dumb girl, everyone loves her for it. Though Sachi won me over in her route, such a good girl. But Sachi and Michiru together are the ultimate combo.

contemplating on playing 恋愛0キロメートル, anyone played it? what are your impressions?

Played too many either pure love games that fall short, or dark games for the occasional fap that made me depressed after. Wanting a change of pace right about now, anything funny but not childishly stupid or moe.

It's pretty good, common part is well paced and funny.
But only the routes of the twins are any good.

Fun eroge, great dialogue with all around likeable characters. Though what >>8369044 said is true, the twins' routes are solid but the other sisters' routes are really lacking.

It's mostly advertisement about the content, pretty straightfoward way of getting people's interest. I don't think they're made with the intention of being "proper" titles.

I'm one "route" (if you can call it that) away from finishing Divi-Dead. It's both better and worse than I thought it would be, but nothing stands out about it as much as the number of unintentionally hilarious lines.

I know immersion can solve pretty much everything, but I just was wondering if you really need to frequent 2ch and pass the day searching for japanese customs/jokes and the like to understand things like Ruitomo, or the majority who reads it actually don't really care about understanding every reference.
Or is it just me being stupid for trying to play something advanced while my japanese is still horrible?

I always run into seemingly funny sentences in VNs, but they seem to be pretty normal in written form. For example :

お父さんの姿を見にした途端、いきなりピシッと背筋を伸ばす太郎くん。

The english in me is waiting for the rest of the sentence.. What about tarou? Is he going to do something? Its like theres no verb and there should be...

I did a search in VNDB for horror VNs translated to languages I can more or less understand, and I found this one called Kurahime. How is it? I google searched it, and found a review saying that it was the inspiration for Saya no Uta, Heaven's Feel, and Cross Channel. Is he full of shit?
