I know that feel. As soon as there's some sort of time restriction, I automatically worry about making the best out of whatever time I have available. Even if I told myself that I would just play the damn game without caring how well I do or which end I will get.

Yesterday I've finely finished AT3 (it feels like I got ps3 solely for this purpose). Sadly it felt overall weaker than both AT1&2.
They really would do better with 2d sprites rather than quite badly made 3d. Singing scenes and sometimes even walks look either poor or simply stupid. Running around battlefield was even worse idea although this part probably came from idea to make another original combat system. AT1 was good enough for that while AT2 was waaaaaaay better and original.
Replacing numerous songs with other personae and 5 body 5 face hyumas another disappointing part, yet minor one.
Last part would be hymnos. While they are still fairly decent, they felt quite distant from the plot (partly thanks to absurdly looking 3d characters). Honestly I somewhat memorized only EXEC_ViiBaCi_MjiiRa and EXEC_REBIRTHIA=PROTOCOL/ (partly because parts of this one used as bgm).
The more I think about it, the more it seems shitty 3d design and battle system ruined complex picture for me.

Lastly I wonder if I should try atelier. Does it have interesting story/setting, character development/whatsoever?

I want to make sure the first song I listen to with this set-up is amazing. Which Ar Tonelico or Akiko Shikata track/album should I go with?

Also, the DAC is going to be a bottleneck in your rig. The Burson amp is decent enough to reveal flaws in your $200 DAC, which is going to be exaggerated by the detailedness of your K701.

As someone who actually learned shits about electronics, the DAC is almost never the bottleneck of an audio system, unless your DAC is so shitty. E7 is a good DAC, and anything better wouldn't make a noticeable difference. That's what people mean by "every good DAC sounds exactly the same".

Amplifier is NOT the magical device that "fixes" how your cans sound. It's just what its name implies : the electronic device that amplifies signals. The more linear, the more accurate, the less noise etc... the better. There's also power-related stuff like gain, effiency, output power and so on... With a good amp, you'll get louder sound with little if any distortion. Any amp that CHANGES how a speaker sounds is technically a bad product. In other words, E9 is a top-notch amp except its kinda high output impedance. Also there're some arguments that in certain cases tube amps are better than solid state amps and vice versa, but I can't remember them now, and I hadn't ever verified them either.

My advice is never take "audiophile"'s myths seriously. Most people can't distinguish different amplifiers in ABX tests, and there are even fewer people when it comes to DAC. Biggest differences always come from upgrading your headphones.

Unless the speakers/headphones and the amp and whatnot were designed as parts of a same system, each of the component is allowed to have some flaws that could be compensated by some other components, as long as the cost/performance is optimum. In other words, imperfect shits were meant to be perfect together by the designer himself.
But most of high-end headphones and amplifiers and so on are independent products that aim to be as perfectly close to the designer's goal as possible so that's not the case here.

If you still don't believe in amps making a difference, why don't you borrow a pair of Ultrasone Edition 8s and plug it into an iPod. Technically, it should sound awesome because the headphones are low impedance, easy to power, and it's the most expensive part of the rig. But I guarantee you that it will sound shit compared to a simple, but sensible headphone set up that costs half as much.

I guess there's been no more news of the GUST game for PSVita? I remember getting quite a large Ar Tonelico feel from the images when I first saw them and haven't been able to shake it since.

If not AT, I'd like for them to give us a more combat-orientated alchemy game along the lines of Mana Khemia. The balance of alchemy, story and battles in that game really appealed to me, so much so that I imported the second game from the US.

I am replaying AT3 so I can get Tyria's and Cocona's end but I don't want to go through with doing Saki's route. It didn't take until AT3 for Cocona to become botched. She was already botched in AT2, along with the rest of the vanguards. Don't get me wrong, they had good framework, and I really wanted to like all of them, but in the end, every vanguard not named Croix lacked a presence compared to the reyvateils and even the shopkeepers.

It was sheer lack of focus, I think. Sure, they had their little substories going on, but it was NEVER about them. The only exception was when the party went to rescue Cocona, and she obviously wasn't around to get screentime there.

Which is probably why AT1's and AT3's vanguards feel so much more significant in comparison, like main supporting characters instead of background props.

AT3's supporting vanguards were ultimately pretty forgettable, too, but it was more because they were just boring characters. Especially Hikari Gojo, goddamn. Its like they set out to make him dull. Fighting doctor who's 5-10 years older than the rest of the main cast? He should be cool, mature, and world-wise, not generic children's movie/western cartoon single dad with a bit of plot knowledge.

AT3 packs all the good plot at the back end of the game, so it feels pretty dull up until halfway through Phase 2.

It is in many ways a downgrade from AT2, but overall if you enjoyed 1 and 2 you will enjoy 3.

As someone else said, the biggest thing is that as all the good stuff is back-loaded as opposed to 1 and 2 which spread their good parts out.

One good thing about AT3 compared to the others is that the vanguards actually get some focus. The bad thing is that you're stuck with the same tiny party. Theres a few characters that have almost no excuse for not joining other than developer laziness. Its kind of sad.

AT3 is the Return of the Jedi to AT2's Empire Strikes Back. Very few people consider it to be better than 2, but pretty much every fan of the series agrees that it's more than good enough to be worth playing.

And depending of your tastes it is actuallly possible to like the overall game and battle system more than 2. It really depends of the person here.
The problem is that it really takes a while to get into the fighting system. I spent about 15 hours forgetting that hyumas are changing the battle bgm. And getting it afterward isn't really easier.

My personnal order is 3>2>1, with 2 still being quite high on my list of favorite games.
Keep in mind that a lot of the worse cricticisms saying that is it "the worst game ever" are made by people who are saying that JRPGs ARE FOR KIDS OR FAGGOTS ANYWWAY or by nostalgiafags.


tl;dr: I bought a ps3 only for this and I have no regrets. It should be clear enough.

Problem is that some of them are hard to avoid since it would also happen IRL, and for others the ARTverse play with them, so you learn before the end of the first part that most of the "cliches" were false anyway. Like Sakia who pretty much WANTED to be abducted by Archia, sorry Shirou.

If helping Saki = stereotype and making Aoto a Croix or an anti-hero bastard =stereotype too, due to the number of anti-heroes nowadays, we're kind of stuck here. (I've yet to see another rpg where the heroine turn people into cakes, though.)

How much was he involved in the Atelier series anyway? I only remember him being Total Command in the AT Series. But yeah, if his future games are anything like AT, I personally can't wait for them. Bonus points if they use the AT lore

I believe he started as fresh meat on Gust's audio department (and, to some extent, he is still in charge of that up to this day), and shortly after he went on and made AT. After that, he kinda focused just on AT.

I could be wrong, though, as this is just guessing from my part.

Got my copy of AT1 today and jesus christ, this non-hymmnos background music is giving me a bigger Ragnarok Online nostalgiaboner than the character sprites in AT2 did.

Not a fan of the combat system though, how the hell am I supposed to keep my harmonics up when an enemy just hits me once to drop it back down to the previous level every time I go up a level? Also, what about when I get to the point of oneshotting enemies? Does that mean I won't be able to get higher than level 1 items any more?

It has just dawned on me again that my Atelier Annie save got deleted some time ago. Annie is probably one of my favorite protagonists, in games in general. She has a clear goal in life. To marry someone rich so she can be lazy.

Get your girl some harmonics-boosting gear, put paralysis effects on your weapons to keep the enemy from attacking you, and make sure that your vanguards never get too good gear.

I've actually had Lyner use his fists in some fights to make sure I get the highest harmonics. Silly, I know.
