Looks like you could definitely use some time in practice mode for Stage 3, since both the stage and Keine weren't very acceptable. Especially in comparison to how cleanly stages 1-2 were done (that one Wriggle card excepted, though you did kinda get a raw deal as far as positioning goes on it). And keep your head on straight, Keine kick should never ever happen and the noncard right after that is probably easy enough that you shouldn't die there either.
Dodging her other noncards entirely as human side is somewhat questionable, I think. I go youkai when dodging starts to get complex. Sure it makes the pattern even further complicated, but running around unfocused is asking for trouble. (well, it worked on the second version, but still.)
Oogh, Three Treasures - Country death. I guess that was just a dumb mistake, but you really can't afford those on a Lunatic run.

As for stage 4, it might be a good idea to dodge Marisa's noncards a little higher than you're doing. The pattern doesn't change considerably when you're a reasonable amount under midscreen, and it gives you a lot more room to fade back while waiting for an opening.
A miss and a bomb on Shoot the Moon probably shouldn't happen, give that card a few more rounds in Spell Card Practice. (Basically, just stream it the whole way through, you'll do enough damage so you don't have to double back before the card ends.)

The bullets of the rabbit fairies at the start of stage 5 are more or less aimed, so if you move with a streaming mindset you should be able to control things a lot better than that.

And finally, you died a number of times with 2+ bombs left. Granted, one of them was the Keine kick, so it's understandable that you weren't expecting that, but other than that you really really should never die with bombs remaining, especially more than one, as Border team. I guess just pay more attention to bombing in reaction to death, dunno if there's really any way you can practice that.

You can try this method of doing Starlight Typhoon. 100% success rate guaranteed. http://replays.gensokyo.org/download.php?id=17303

I recommend you use Yukari to during Double Spark, dodging the star takes priority. Reimu's amulet doesn't do much damage against Marisa.

Don't do Shoot the Moon from that position, try to be higher, so you can move down when a hard situation arise.

There are maybe a few locations you want to bomb preemptively so you can save bomb stocks :
1. Midboss Marisa's 2nd noncard.
2. Tewi's 1st noncard.
3. Consecutive 3 ring fairies after midboss Marisa.
4. Boss Mystia's 2nd noncard.
Use Reimu's bomb instead Yukari, it does more damage.

Good job on safespotting boss Keine's 2nd spell-card, General Headquarter Crisis. If you can help it, the red arrowheads won't cross the second 'e' of 'enemy' marker, so you can finish that card faster by being below of Keine directly.

You can bomb at least once during the stage to gain more point-items, T. It makes the final screenshot even more amusing with more point-items.

Or you could play on Sakuya B & work for timing yourself a border during the spam-part in the latter stage and then misdirect your shot to kill every single fairy during the spam.

I personally find 7 to be a lot easier, and it also works better for learning proper techniques and good playstyle, in part because it actually rewards you for good habits (grazing as close as possible, moving as few as possible, etc). Also the extra stage is a tad easier, so it's real good for building confidence!

But anyway. Time points. You want to stay in human mode for the stage part, and switch to youkai mode for the boss part. Much more details here
http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Imperishable_Night/Gameplay#Phantom_Gauge

Also for enemy-spawning mooks, you want to wait until all the blob things are out before killing the one spawning them, without killing any of the blobs. Killing the spawning guy actually gives you more time points than killing the spawned blobs individually.

Memorize stages and enemy spawn points, Know when it's safe to use the point of collection line, and abuse the fuck out of it. If you're playing the Border Team, you can just stay on the line for a good part of the game and you'll rake up points like mad. I find that it's sometime okay to bomb to grab the points if I can't get up high enough to the PoC line, but you shouldn't make this a habit~

>> No.8207185

>>8207147
Notice the left bottom corner, there's a meter that goes from left (blue/human) to right (red/youkai)
Shoot unfocused during the stage, so your human meter raises and you receive time
During bosses, stay focused and graze a lot, so your youkai meter raises. Grazing bosses' bullets while focused gives time, while grazing normal fairy bullets doesn't

If you are sure of yourself, it's best to do Wriggle and Mystia while shooting unfocused too, since they are pretty easy and don't have much to graze

Also, if you see a fairy that spawns a lot of familiars (those white wisp-ish things), focus to kill it, killing the fairy kills all the familiars and makes the bullets near the familiars that died disappear. This helps clearing the screen of bullets and gives you much more time
This is especially important in Stage 4, 6 and Extra stages, but the other stages have those situations too

I knoe, right?

One more thing. When you're shooting focused, you can't kill the blobs/familiar/what have you. You might have noticed that they turn invisible when you do that. This is extremely crucial for scoring, cos you can kill the spawning guy without hitting its familiars, thus maximizing the point gain.

And even though Imperishable Night is very lenient with deathbombing, please don't depend on it so much. Deathbombing reduces your time points significantly, so try not to get hit instead.

PCB stage 5 is all about pattern. Once you know the pattern, Myon's real easy, especially her non-spells. Stage 6 is also about the pattern, but more importantly, it's about learning the hitboxes. I noticed that after I got a good feel about the butterfly bullets and large bullets' hitbox, I managed to succesfully capture Yuyuko's cards almost every time. There's loads of bullets, sure, but a majority of them won't hit you at all; Yuyuko is just firing randomly~ Also you can be a Jew and time your Supernatural Border, which makes the game incredibly easy.

SA is rape. Yeah, it's arguably harder than the rest of the series. UFO is probably as hard, but I just find it annoying. Fucking saucers....

Dear Seppo Hovi,

With bombing allowed, I might as well go all the way and aim for 1.5B or something. Still, those numbers don't mean much to the common onlooker that can only barely clear Phantasm, if at all. They can, however, appreciate the number of lives and bombs remaining. That's where I make the distinction between an "impressive" run and an "amusing" one, I guess.

I admit, my cherry route through the stage is suboptimal, but I haven't put in the thought and effort to make something better. I'm thinking of going for a 1.3B no miss/bomb/focus/border break run, but we'll see how that goes.

Love,

Blah, blah, blah. You are designed to be annoying. You know that people play this game on Lunatic, right?

Learn the route and you will get it 100% of the time. The stage 1 UFO route is pretty hard to mess up on any difficulty. After stage 1, the route hardly matters as long as you are on the general path.

You must understand that the token system is part of the gameplay and the challenge. It's not there to hold your hand.

Anyone with moderate experience in the game will not have any problems following an great route with a great success rate.

So I tried Ten Desires for the first time yesterday. I lost a continue after the first stage (on purpose) and as soon as the big countdown reached 0, my game froze. After a while the game closed and it gave me a message about some of my graphic controllers fucking up, and the computer switched to 4 bit mode with no way to return to normal. From touhou wiki concerning imperishable night

>If you got hit, you can use Last Spell to avoid losing a life. You must bomb within 0.1-0.9 seconds of getting hit (depends on which team you chose, the number of bombs you have left, and if you're facing a boss's spellcard or not). This short time interval is called "the border between life and death". A last spell uses two normal bombs (or one if you only have one), but is more powerful and lasts longer. Unfortunately, you still lose a lot of time orbs (as if you had gotten hit) if you use last spell.

>Also, although it's not as widely known, the normal counter-bomb (or "deathbomb") from previous entries is present in this title as well. After your character is hit by an enemy shot, there is an extremely short window where bombing will activate a normal spellcard, not a Last Spell, and the game will continue as if you had not been hit at all.

Has anyone ever counted how many frames (or milliseconds) these periods last?

for Love Sign "Non-Directional Laser" and Light Sign "Earthlight Ray" you just need pretty basic streaming. You know, slowly moving from left to right, until you are almost out of room, then making a fast movement so you can turn around.

Also, even though you did very well on the most nonspells, I recommend you to kill the boss slaves. Reimu's non-focused shot/bomb are not the best for that, but it will make your live easier.

By the way, by being focused above the POC, you can grab stuff even without full power.

Please check them out

And, well
On Magic Team's run, during the fight against Reimu, I accidentally press the focus button for almost a second while not moving, then I panic and die
I hope it can still count as a no-focus run

Meanwhile, I keep failing non-stop at UFO's Extra and CtC (though I just need some practice on CtC, seeing as I downloaded it yesterday and all)
An by the way, how does CtC's system work? Sometimes when I shoot a Hakurei Orb it doesn't absorb anything (like against chen on stage 4 when she is shooting those aimed yellow bullets). I don't understand what the requirements for the Last Spells are either, I thought it was something related to your Hakurei, but it apparently isn't?

Regarding latency...

Taken from the vsync path .ini:
[Option]
Vsync = 0
SleepType = 1
BltPrepareTime = 0
AutoBltPrepareTime = 1
AllowShortDelay = 0
GameFPS = 60
ReplaySkipFPS = 240
ReplaySlowFPS = 30
LockBackBuffer = 0
D3DMultiThread = 0
HookDirectInput = 0
Can someone explain the theory behind this patch. Why is it needed? Assuming that input is read at the same speed as frames are written to the sceen, If your fps is 60 I don't see how there could be more lag than 1 frame (16.6ms).

I think that people ignore a certain other setting, that may affect your latency much more.
If my logic doesn't fail, render queue (nvidia: maximum pre-rendered frames, ati:flip queue) should generate much more input latency. If you don't change your render queue setting, the default is 3 and therefore it should cause input latency of 3 frames (50ms).
http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_13.html
Render queue is sometimes (somewhat erroneously) called triple buffering
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_buffering#Triple_buffering (touhous are directx games),
but proper triple buffering doesn't have this kind of problem.
Have I misunderstood something? Is render queue exactly what the vsync patch tries to correct? I atleast don't think so.

Also, there may or may not be a way for a game programmer to manually disable or change the value of render queue. However, if I had to make a gues I'd say that there isn't, since for example in nvidia control panel "Maximum pre-rendered frames" doesn't have an option called "Application-controlled". Is someone here experienced enough with directx programming to answer this last question?

Then again, if you do think about it and look at the configure options from the later games like this one >>8211053
you could count 1+1 and sort of figure out what the vsync patch is doing. I'm assuming that in Subterranean Animism stable and normal mean one frame in a queue, while automatic uses vsync with triple buffering (without queue). Fast propably means no vsync and no queue.

This would render the latency part of the vsync patch useless in the latter games, but not the patch as a whole, because the latency part isn't the only property of the patch.

I don't know. There doesn't seem to be any official information about this in english. Can someone please translate the readme files of the vsync patches?

My advice is just play on lunatic straight away, as soon as you get in to touhou. Seriously. I did that with EoSD and 1cced it 2 months after I started playing (admittedly, this was with 1-2 hours practice a day and with 5 lives to start off with). I'm still getting better pretty quick, and I don't have any ridiculous natural talent. >whats with the amount of players who have somehow been playing for 5 months or less and are getting lunatic 1CC's?
It's really not that difficult to do if you practice for at least an hour every day. I don't recall exactly how long it took me to get my first Lunatic 1cc (I can probably estimate it by taking Fairy Wars's release date, adding a few days, and ending at whenever I made my IN replay) but 5 months is well within the realm of believability.

At least, that was my experience, and I don't generally consider myself to have some innate skill at games in general. Competence, sure, but I'm no natural master.

Never mind, I disabled verxtex buffers in custom.exe, and the background works.

When Ten Desires came out, I 1cc'd Hard on my first try, and 1cc'd Lunatic on my second. I even cleared Extra on my first blind run, which is supposed to be notoriously gimmicky.

But I have plenty of Touhou experience, of course.

>My advice is just play on lunatic straight away, as soon as you get in to touhou.
I haven't seen any experienced players agree with that.
>I did that with EoSD and 1cced it 2 months after I started playing
That's average for a regular Lunatic 1cc.
>admittedly, this was with 1-2 hours practice a day
Well then how...
> and with 5 lives to start off with
That's what I thought.
>The way I see it, there's no point playing normal/hard unless you're always going to be a casual player (not that there's anything wrong with that).
You are playing two hours a day and barely scraping together a single 1CC with a bloated stock of lives, and you are calling people casuals? Come back after you have done a straight 30+ hour session, like some of the people in here have.

Anyone doing straight 30+ hour sessions on a shmup better have some of the highest scores in the world, otherwise that's just pitiable.
