Well this is a matter of hereditary traits, and since we're only dealing with two traits each we can easily map this using a Punnett Square. We're human is a dominant trait and not recessive since both have completely human appearance (aside from Myon), thus making the youkai and ghost parts the recessive genes. Mapping it out, there's a 25% chance for a full-human child, 25% for human/youkai, 25% for human/ghost, and 25% for a ghost/youkai which I guess means something along the lines of Mima or Tojiko. Then again, this IS Gensokyo, so a ghost/youkai mix can just end up looking as perfectly human as anyone else.

It might be if you consider how most characters look perfectly human except for a small margin. Animal-based youkai may be an exception though since they retain some animal parts although that may be incomplete dominance.

We also know that since Youmu is a girl, she inherits the X^N chromosome from youki. keeping in line with my theory, since she has one normality gene, she is human looking. This unfortunately allows us not to determine anything about her mother.

There chance that her mother is either full youkai in appearance or is a carrier of the full youkai appearance allele. This means that Youmu is one of two genotypes: (X^N , X^N) or (X^N , X^n).

Rinnosuke on the other hand is much easier to genotype. We know he is male, and we know he does not have the appearance of a full youkai. So we know his genotype is (X^N , Y).

If youmu is a carrier of the full youkai appearance allele, it is possible, that when the two have children, half of the males born will appear as full youkai.

I think does not take genetics into account and just humanizes the ancient mythological creatures in whatever way he pleases.

Some are direct references to specific beings who were males so I don't see why wouldn't he just have changed genders out of the blue from the same mythological character.

There is another way to look at this (albeit more boring). Instead of attributing her half ghost side to a single gene, we can consider that she is actually a hybrid between the two species of gensokyo residents. In that case, she is most likely sterile. There are however rare exceptions to this rule such different species of hybrid sunfish that somehow still have the ability to reproduce

I don't think Youmu's half-ghostness is reducible. It's just what she is, not like someone who's half black.

I think you'd get a human, less ghosty than Youmu but still ghosty, who has Kourin's ability, and then a separate soul half of that thing.

I always thought that her "ghost half" is actually her soul, which is controlling the body, using it as an anchor to the world of the living, like an philactery. Should Youmu's body be destroyed, her "ghost" would be destroyed as well.

The difference between a Lich and Youmu is that Youmu is a living philactery, still needing to eat, drink and sleep, just like a normal human. This probably also translates into Youmu having a functional uterus.
