It's a dungeon crawler. Demon's Souls was structured like an action game, but played like an action-RPG, so I had a hard time classifying it as anything in particular. Dark Souls is straight up RPG.

Dark Souls has more role-playing than just about any other game that's classified as an RPG, like Disgaea, for example.

For starters, there are the Covenants. You can join the forest hunter Covenant and protect the cat from trespassers, or you can join another Covenant and hunt down the players who have been marked as sinners or whatever. I haven't really messed with them so I can't go into much detail right now, but there is quite a bit of role-playing in the game.

Not to mention the game is packed with every staple of an RPG - stats, character classes, leveling, tons of armor, weapons, rings, etc etc.

Why don't you tell me why Dark Souls ISN'T an RPG and, say, Xenoblade is?

Last time I checked, RPG = Role Playing Game, but you didn't even mention how you could possibly roleplay.

Covenants don't mean shit. I auto joined Way of White just because I decided that I wanted to be a cleric. An hour later after buying everything at entry level from the vendor, I left the covenant and killed the fat friar in Firelink. (That beware of fatty sign in the PS3 version next to him was my doing.) I proceeded to hop from Chaos for the spells then ended with the Sun faction.

Levels don't mean shit in Dark Souls. Neither does armor or classes. I'm still in the Knight starting gear because I have not seen a good reason the change. I have a shield that blocks 100% damage and has high stability. Not to mention I don't run around loaded up on junk gear. Being competent is a whole lot better than the "RPG Staples".

Anyway, I'm going to back to playing the game instead of arguing what it classifies as.

What the hell are you talking about. There are multiple ways to play Dark Souls depending on how you build your character. If you want to specialize in miracles, then guess what, you're going to level up and pump your miracle stat up. If you want to use melee weapons, you need to focus on strength or dexterity, and let's not forget about endurance. If you want to be a mage, then you need whatever the fuck mages use. So there are your classes, and they all play differently.

Levels and equipment mean a lot as well. If you were level 1, equipped with a broken sword, you would never be able to kill a player who's level 70, complete with high-end gear, all upgraded to its maximum value. Obviously this situation is impossible, but it illustrates my point - someone who has better gear and a better character build has an inherent advantage. Skill only gets you so far.

And your invasion situation, while amusing, is not likely to happen without astronomical luck. Demon's Souls PvP took place on stages that had suitable "arenas" for the battle, at level 125. A min-maxed character with the best possible gear is likely to wipe the floor with someone who just does whatever without thinking. It's all about giving yourself as much of an advantage as possible - it's very unlikely that any two players' characters will be legitimately equal.

I will admit that they can be considered the same thing, but can also vary from game to game. The Souls series just happens to favor the custom builds with preemptive stats from classes.

As for PVP, so far Dark Souls has been different than Demon Souls. The rare invader is either too stupid/unprepared to deal with another invader that they set themselves up for a backstab/kick off a cliff. Although staples for PVP are starting to show up with that (Fog?) ring that makes it so that backstabs do 1000 damage.

So far little multiplayer experience in Dark Souls outside of the few invaders and helping people who can't do the Capre Demon.

threads with an OP with porn and continuously being porn are deleted pretty quickly, whereas some normal thread with a few bits of porn really isn't touched.

The janitor doesn't have the time to sort through every post on every thread and pass individual judgement on each and every one of them, so the optimal choice is to take out the things that are of the biggest problem. This also applies to bans, I've made plenty of crap posts, but only a single bad OP and I was banned. This is one reason I wouldn't be surprised sudo hasn't been banned yet, assuming he isn't just evading all the time.
