Well, ZUN himself being booze-driven probably has something to do with it. Suika's got a gourd that infinitely flows with sake, I mean really the Oni are probably some of ZUN's most personalized Touhous.

If I could choose between a round-the-world vacation tour, or a night drinking fine beers with ZUN, I'd take the latter.

Although... technically actually the Ibuki gourd doesn't flow infinitely; rather it's lined with the extract of some kind of creature that excretes sake from its skin, and with time will turn X amount of water into sake..

One must wonder what goes through ZUN's mind when he thinks up any Touhou. I seriously hope that on ZUN's deathbed, he claims that Gensokyo is real, just like the stories that his games are based off of, and the only way to get there is... and then he would die, forever trolling everyone on /jp/.

But there actually is an interview somewhere about what ZUN was thinking when he thought up Yuugi. Something about an energetic and playful oni that should represent oni as a whole. And something about how her trademark sake cup never spilling being inspired from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

Yeah, even today he still puts out so many "... wat" designs. Like Miko's hair-ears. What the hell. Do they have something to do with her super-hearing ability? Miko's still awesome though nonetheless due to having a Tao priest's exorcism sword. That's just straight up badass. ZUN seems to know a bit about Eastern history as well as mythos.

Come to think of it, this originality/willingness to introduce things that aren't run of the mill tropes (I can't recall the last time I saw a manga/anime/game bring up Taoism), is probably a good part of why people like Touhou so much. Not too many people can consistently make such unique/weird characters.

He certainly succeeded. Dialogue and character design aside, succeeded in characterisation by acting. After all, Yuugi's whole so-called boss fight is pretty much her effortlessly running ahead of you through the whole stage and partying hard.
