I want to play Mahjong in real life, but all my board game friends that I might have been able to convince to play it have moved to different places so we almost never see each other anymore.

First place >.300 and last place <.200 aren't too shabby if you've been playing in the dan-level room. Keep those percentages playing in the 4-dan+ room and you could probably even call yourself good.

I guess 4dan rate 1800 is still a common goal.
I stopped playing after I went from 5dan to 3dan to 4dan to 3dan to 5dan etc. for well over a year.
It's impossible to advance in tenhou's bullshit system past 5th dan.
Just a heads-up, if you want to continue grinding on tenhou.

Starting in the dan lobby is stupid though. Play in the public lobby as long as the points you get still add up. 1dan or 2dan. Enjoy the easy wins, you will not get them in the upper lobbies.

I don't believe that premium members get better deals, but I believe the claims that it's altered to be "more exciting" mahjong or something -- draws aren't completely random.

you are better off listening to me because of my vast experience.

having a premium account increases the chance of winning games. it keeps your 1st place % at about 27-28%. using a free account will lock your win % to 25% starting at 5 dan. It's not much of a boost but you are pretty much given about 1000 point advantage to hedge off any point losses you incurred. bare in mind though, it is still hard as fuck to advance to 7 dan even with a premium account. i still suspect it's amount of money you invest on Tenhou that improves the odds to rank up.

Everyone that has reached 5dan must have noticed it. It's the same with both 4P and 3P, my winning chances dropped drastically as soon as I reached 5dan on both even though I was playing in the same lobby. Reaching 6dan from then on isn't an impossible feat, but it's incredibly frustrating and chances are that you'll drop to 5dan or lower shortly after.
