The chinese bootlegs are fine. I know, I know.... "bootlegs". However they are one of the few things where the bootleg is the same quality. The only real taboo behind them is that the creator of the GK will never get money from it, only e2046 will.

The only thing that stops them from being great is your own paining skills, that is if you are bad at painting. Thats what scares most away, that and the initial costs of painting GKs, mainly due to an airbrush and compressor. Not that you need them but it greatly, greatly helps.

When I was buying the Nanoha movie it was kind of impressive that Amazon actually had it discounted far enough to make up for just how incredibly rape their international shipping is on one item compared to like CD-Japan with SAL.

There's the possibility you could still come out ahead after proxying or forwarding with that.
Theoretically, ignoring the way they manage stock-which has never quite managed to screw me over because I've never seen them overbook-I could control the shipping date of something within 2 months on HLJ by ordering it alongside something with a release date sufficiently far off into the future then using the ship in stock option and/or cancelling that thing, right? Ie. their system is too dumb to go "hey that pre-order is more than 2 months away they'll never ship together anyways"?

Why are some companies 1/8 figures so much smaller than others?

My Alter and Kotobukiya strike witch 1/8 figures are the same scale and look fine together, but my "amiami" branded 1/8 figures are almost 50% smaller.

As a result I cannot display them together without it looking weird. This isn't a big deal or anything, but it would be nice to have a complete set of the same scale.

The lazy answer is AmiAmi Zero-or at least whoever did their Strike Witches figs-can't into scale.

>> No.7705085 [DELETED]

>>7705077
Well, character heights can be argued since scale is based off of height. Still, the figures aren't 'amiami' figures, they're from a different company. Amiami may have posted incorrect scales for the figs you bought from their site.

It is odd that one companies figures that are supposedly 1/8 aren't nearly as tall as other figures of supposedly the same scale. I think amiami just had the wrong scales posted, ill check and post back in a bit.

>> No.7705096

>>7705085

Well, amiami lists the manufacturer as "amiami", and the packaging has amiami brand markings on it. I honestly don't know which company they hired to produce their figures.

I also just noticed that their website no longer list the scale on these figures like they used to, so maybe they gave up on calling them 1/8.

>> No.7705112

>>7705096
Yeah, they probably were selling a 1/9 or 1/10 scale fig as a 1/8. Dunno who the manufacturer is though. And thats why you only trust trusted brands for figures, with crappier brands (griffon being one) you don't know what you may be getting, like that one guy here who not only got a screwed up yukari fig but almost banned from amiami for notifying them of getting a defective (bootleg?) griffon fig from them.

>> No.7705137

>>7705112

The thing is, aside from the scale being off these amiami ones are very nicely made figures. The detail is fine and the paint quality is better than Kotobukiya or griffon stuff.

With that being said, I want to punch the guy who made the amiami figure bases in the dick. Worst figure stands in my entire collection.

>> No.7705349

Yeah, I got the AmiAmi Perrine (because it's like, the only fucking Perrine fig in existence), and the box definitely doesn't claim any particular scale. Can't remember if the product page ever did either (I'm pretty sure that it didn't, at least by the time I ordered mine, as I was always a little paranoid that it'd be out of scale), but it definitely doesn't now.

Eyeballing it, compared to my 1/8ths and figmas, I'd say it's about 1/10 or so. The pose she's in doesn't help either, what with her being completely bent over at the waist, which just makes her seem even smaller.

I just stuck her behind the others, for some forced perspective. Other than the scale thing, it's a pretty nice figure (still gonna replace it with the Alter as soon as they get around to making it, though, because Alter).

Because the original figure was supposed to stand like this, similar to how the Perrine figure stands on her base with a metal pin.

Sorry if I'm a bother OP, but where can a complete beginner learn the basics of putting together a GK such as what tools are necessary for assembling and painting GKs such as yours?

Although this tutorial is very informative:
http://codyscoop.com/howto.shtml
I still don't know what tools I would need first. (And what paints you need to achieve those transparency effects and what not).

Actually what I really want to do is put together and paint that Kriska GK you have. It looks so awesome.

I'm sorry if I sound like a complete dumbass who doesn't know what he's getting into. Still I really want to try this even if I mess up a few GKs along the way (money isn't an issue).

Anyway if you don't feel like explaining that's alright I'll just continue piecing things together and then start ordering some GKs to practice on.

By the way, is this: http://www.e2046.com/product/9209
A good place to buy that GK? It is says it's on pre-order but someone told me it's been out for a while.

Thank you very much.

http://home.wideopenwest.com/~tinweasel/techniques.html

I had a couple of more but I can't find them now sorry. Ask /toy/ though.

Also that e2046 GK you linked is a bootleg, but it's a lot cheaper to buy that to practice on for your first time than to try some pricey real kit.

Speaking of GKs.... I thought I had all the mold release off of the one I am working on but it seems like I didn't. So I primed it without noticing a few spots of mold release left on (you can't really see it) and the primer ended up leaving a few holes in the paint (mold release stops things from sticking to it). Now i've got to submerge a few pieces in a solution to remove the primer and to remove the little bits of mold release agent left. This is why I dislike working with resins. That and the dust from sanding it is poisonous.

I could of had it done today but now I have to wait a couple days to be able to prime it again. The parts that are fine are too small to get much progress done but any progress is good progress I guess....

Personally I never use anything to protect myself when airbrushing so yes you could. Personally, I think its all horse shit about the dangers of it. Inhaling water + tiny bit of paint pigment cant be nearly as bad as smoking a cigarette with what ever is in it.

That being said if you use paint thinner to thin your paints to airbrush, I would definitely protect myself. Water does a fine job thinning paints though, assuming they are acrylic of course.

there is nothing to protect against while using acrylic paints, but who the fuck would use those anyway? lacquer paints produce the best finish and color but are unfortunately highly poisonous hence the need for booth + respirator.

Also resin dust is very bad for your lungs, a respirator ( or at least a mask) should be worn while sanding.

I've gotten slightly confused at colors though. Like you always see hair shine in anime, but is glossy colors best for hair, or is it better with flat colors? Pre-painted models seem kind of like flat colors.

I also noticed none of my "professional" figures seem to have any advanced shading. Does this mean shading is mainly for professional garage kit painters? (Well, there are some shading on certain parts, like the jacket of the UBW Rin)

He did say GSC. Those are something I wish I hadn't missed out on since the prices were pretty damn do-able. Although I'm not that desperate for Sumika, don't love the Meiya's face, and would rather Kasumi wasn't a pilot suit, so eh.

Is tape or that liquid-like stuff best for masking? Or does it simply depend on what I'm going to mask? (Like I can see masking eyes being easier with liquid, than making a really tiny tape piece)

We will be refunding the 2000 JP Yen shipping fee to all customers who placed an order for the figure from overseas. If you paid for your order with a credit card, we will be refunding the amount directly to the account linked to your card. If you paid using Paypal, we will be sending a 2000 JP Yen refund to your Paypal account. The refunds will start from the 11th August 2011 and should be complete within a few days.

>As of the 10th August, we have confirmed that the surface mail packages have started to arrive at the following countries:

>China (Mainland)
>Hong Kong
>Taiwan
>Singapore
>Thailand

>Other countries may have to wait until mid-October before the packages start to arrive. Having to wait for a figure you expected much earlier is certainly not a pleasant experience, and once again we cannot apologize enough for the careless error on our part. Not trying to play the devil's advocate here, but it is possible that they hired people to take care of the oversea shipments, since the nendos were sent directly from Hong Kong.

Assuming there was a miscommunication or flatout mistake (omitting the mention of EMS), it would explain this giant mess.

While a mistake like this is really baffling, it is even more unlikely for a company trying to have oversea business to intentionally trying to cash more on their customers in such fashion. They could potentially fuck up the product price, but the shipping method? That's bound to generate a backlash sooner or later, and the fact they are willing to refund it completely instead of just apologies looks like fair game to me.
