There have always been, and likely will always be oni in popular culture. But yes, think it's fairly safe to say Takahashi Rumiko is singlehandedly responsible for the way oni are portrayed in popular culture today.

If we are talking physical appreciation only, you are not taking into account the attraction of exoticism, simply that she has a body shape that is very hard if not impossible for most women to achieve, even with the intention and effort. Also on the same theme of exoticism is the fact that while humanoid, Yuugi is not a human being and neither presented as such, putting the exotic constitution of a muscular Yuugi in a different context. Given that we're talking folklore it's sketchy, but it would seem that while oni and humans can hybridize to some extent, they cannot truly interbreed. At least one story makes it a point that oni are however not fully aware of this (humans, or at least the narrator, seem to be).

However, it should be noted that the central oni in that story was something of an outcast and obsessed with the thought of raising a family with a human woman.

Some day I should probably sit down and gather up a library of oni lore references with dates, authors, collections, etc. rather than just referring to stories I read a decade ago and never learned the names of.
