New shump thread, since I can't find one.

Discuss shumps.

Touhou, of course, is my favorite.

Jamestown is another recent release. It has awesome artwork, decent music (except, sadly, for the boss theme, which is recycled), and ok gameplay. It really makes me sad : this game could have become a staple for the genre, but instead it settled for being mediocre.

Been playing Shoot the Bullet as of recent.

Other than that, it's been mostly Cave shmups. DDP and Ketsui. Also, finally got DDP DOJ working on MAME. Fucking PGM encryption bullshit.

Also, I want to try out Ether Vapor and Crimzon Clover sometime. Anyone play either?

I just got 901 million with Lei in Death Smiles 2 Arcade mode. My run was crap though, so I think I'll be able to hit 1 billion+ if everything goes according to keikaku. Anyone know if EOJ's score (~920m) is the western record? I'll be able to beat that for sure.

I use a stick, and I'd say it really doesn't matter. If you're good with a keyboard, use a keyboard. If you're good with an Xbox d-pad, use the Xbox d-pad. etc.

It's worth trying out different things and seeing what you personally like best though. Personally I want to buy a Seimitsu stick since I've never used one, but I've done well enough with my Sanwa so far, so whatever.

Byakuren is only easier than Utsuho in that you can't bombspam Utsuho away. Byakuren's harder by far. First card is either moderate or fuckshit, second non is nearly always a bomb, Magic Butterfly will rape you if you don't know the waves beforehand, Shinki can be extraordinarily difficult at times, and LFS is just plain hard. Utsuho is hard sure, but consistently so, and never ridiculous.

I've been thinking about making my own Shump. What language should I use? Easy cross-platform is important and I also want to use OpenGL bindings. I'll probably pick between Java and C++. What should I do? I already have a prototype in Java that I made a few months ago but I'm not sure if I want to rely on JVM. What would your idea of the perfect Shump be? I want to make it.

Congratulations, I just did the same moments ago as well. It took around 30 attemps when I realized how badly the bombs destroy the game. I just spammed my way through the late stages and didn't capture many if any late game cards. Hardly a respectable way to win, but that's what the game lets you do...

I still remember when the difficulty of shumps didn't rely in the complexity of patterns or quantity of bullets on the screen, nor the size of your hitbox (because at that time you believed that the entire area of your aircraft couldn't be touched), but because of the sluggish controls, and homing bullets that were faster that your own aircraft.

Good old times before everyone started to go all "tourneyfag" on this genre.

My sister won't play this game with me anymore ;_;

>>Then design your game as if it were coming from that company.

That might get more people playing but I still want to be original.

I expect my design to be much different than most popular shumps. Namely, the character design, the music, and the general theme. The bullet patterns, controls, bombs, replays, forced scroll, and so on will stay similar. I am thinking that a few of my ideas may offset some people. The scoring system comes to mind. I'll have to tune it very precisely. I was also thinking about implementing a multiplayer cooperative as well as other specific game modes, such as a practice mode separate from the rest of the game. It would be something like a sandbox, allowing you to change the barrage coming at you.

Right now I'm just thinking but maybe I'll make something out of this.

I played DoDonPachi for the first time just now, and there are a couple things bothering me.

Focused and unfocused movement, what is the proper way to move around in the game? I found out that I can focus by pressing the Z button and unfocus by tapping it, but it just feels a bit weird. Is it the correct way to do it?

2-LOOPs, ALL and all this kind of stuff, what does it mean? I'm guessing it's clearing something without using all lives? Need explaining.

How many stages are there? Are there different difficulties? Also if anyone has some tips for a beginner in this game, please tell me. I'm fairly experienced in Touhou though, so I already know basic gameplay stuff.

Gunbird is the shit, but woefully short.... I have yet to play the sequel though, to my everlasting shame.

You can go into service mode - F2 on MAME I think, and change difficulty, enable the C button as rapid fire, then set the Shift key as A, z key as C and just hold shift for focusing, z for shooting and and x for bombing, just like touhou.
Score runs should be done on FACTORY settings, which are sort of the official default settings of the game, different than the settings mame starts at for the first time. Weird to explain, just highlight the factory settings option and press fire.

2nd loop basically means more and faster bullets, it's horribly unfair on purpose and the devs don't even care if it's humanly possible to beat the game that way.

ALL probably means you beat the true last boss which appear after meeting certain conditions such as no continues, few bombs, finding all the hidden bees, etc, and beating both loops? Not sure either.

>>7640664
If you're using certain versions of MAME you could set up an autofire key for regular shots, but if you're not you'll have to stick with tapping for shot and holding for laser. You get used to it pretty quick though.
1-all means you cleared the first loop.
2-all means you did both loops.
You get into the second loop by completing the first loop and either dying less than 3 times, getting a large enough chain (the exact number depends on your ship type), getting 50 million points, or getting all the bees in at least four levels. It's a repeat of the first six levels except much harder, and with a special boss at the end.
>>7640718
DDP doesn't have an autofire option, you gotta wait until DOJ or Ketsui for that.

I'm pretty sure there's a toggle in service mode for rapid fire in DDP, using button 3.

I just played that for the first time a few days ago also.
It seems like bombs are a lot less forgiving than in most touhou games. Most of the time I try to bomb before I get hit, I just end up getting hit.
I'm pretty bad at all shmups, though.

>> No.7640828

>>7640800
You're allowed to bomb after you've been hit in Touhous. DDP/most other shooters won't let you, so yeah, they're harsher. DDP gives you six bombs per life after you've died a few times though so it's still pretty generous.

>> No.7640856

>>7640788
I can't find this "service mode". I'm using Shmupmame 2.2, and pressing TAB it says that service mode is available on pressing F2 but for me it does nothing. Also I can't change the Rank. Is there an objective in this game, similar to for example, a 1CC normal mode in Touhou?

And again, how many stages are there?

>> No.7640869

>>7640828
Yeah, I have trouble using all my bombs even in touhou where it lets you deathbomb.
DDP was just coin after coin of losing without even using a single bomb.
I guess I need to change my bomb habits. Even when I tell myself "Just bomb like crazy like you don't give a shit", I still don't use all the bombs.

>> No.7640886

>>7640856
Try holding f2 for a while, I have to do that. You may as well just leave the rank at the default, it doesn't change much, and it means you can compare your scores with people or whatever. And yeah, go for a 1cc if you want, that's kinda the default goal for most people I think. Once that's done you can work on looping/getting a good score, though scoring in DDP kinda sucks.
And six stages, plus those six stages again but a lot harder if you loop it. But you probably won't be looping it for a while though, so just six stages for now.

>>7640664
>Also if anyone has some tips for a beginner in this game, please tell me.
The main thing to consider is that the vast majority of bullets in the game are targeted in some way, at least during the stages. And a lot of the time those that aren't, like the ships that send out those little triangle bullets, you can get rid of easily by killing the large ships at the right times to cancel bullets.

So basically just keep in mind that you will be doing a fairly large amount of streaming in comparison to Touhou, and it's pretty wide streaming too. Stage 5 is an especially large example of this, the whole middle section is basically streaming large randomized targeted clumps of bullets: the game the section the motion picture.

Basically just play it for a while until you get used to it, maybe watch a replay or two. It's not any harder to 1cc than the average Touhou lunatic.
Now, 2-all'ing it...

Thanks, it worked.

I also got the "touhou settings" working now. The only problem I have, is that when I shoot unfocused, it feels like the game is lagging. So when I focus, the game speeds up and becomes more difficult. Is this normal?

>> No.7641032

>>7641023
That doesn't sound right, no. It's probably just your imagination, but if you hit f11 you can see the speed the game's running at and make sure it's 100%.

>> No.7641074

Well then, is the game supposed to slow when there are a lot of bullets on the screen? Because it feels like that to me, even though it says 100%.

>> No.7641079

>>7641074
Yes, it does that. Shouldn't have anything to do with what you're firing, but the PCBs that originally ran the game did have slowdown when a bunch of bullets got on the screen, notably in stages 5 and 6. MAME is emulating this slowdown, and a good thing too since you'd get destroyed even harder without it.

>> No.7641135

Haven't followed this for a while, but can Ketsui run perfectly on MAME yet ? And any other news on Demul ?

>> No.7641161

Ketsui is perfect in MAME.

Well, the first loop is anyway. I'm not experienced enough with the second loop to comment, but I haven't seen any complaints.

>> No.7641440

>>7641032
It's definitely not just my imagination. If I'm using focus, there is absolutely no slow in the game, unlike unfocused it plays as you said, slowing when there are bullets. So it kind of feels like cheating to unfocus... The game is running on 100% either way.

>> No.7641452

Also, how do I save states in DoDonPachi? MAME says I can load a save state but I don't know how to save one.

Your own bullets slow down the game too, but your laser does not.

>> No.7641490

>>7641462
To answer you better, there isn't much slowdown in the game just from enemy bullets. A few parts where you get spammed to hell will slow down a lot. But most of the time you need to be using your shot (unfocused, as you say) to get a big effect.

Most people rarely fight TLBs. All those superplays you've seen, those are people playing the best they've pretty much have ever done in their lives.

>>7641601
For me, focus firing for (mini)bosses and times I need to tap dodge. If there's a lot of fast bullet patterns, stay unfocused. It also depends on the game.

Ketsui, you want to get some 5s and then just laser so you can get some awesome scores.

DDP, it depends on the ship you choose, the style you like to play, and the game you're playing. Type-C shot, you just want to shoot and take quick breaks so you get a really good combo without obliterating the screen.

>> No.7643957

What are the conditions for DOOM in DFK BL? Just a 1cc, right? I don't think reaching him is that hard - the Ketsui Arrange is easier to clear than Ketsui's first loop, so it shouldn't take more than 20 hours of practice or so.

Ahahahahaha.

I tried EoSD after not playing for months and I got to Remilia's last spell on hard. I also played it on lunatic and almost beat Patchy. That was after not playing for months so I guess that I have a good shot at it if I practice a little.

I'm going to do a few hard runs on the older Touhous and then go back to UFO. I actually got to Byakuren's last spell quite a few times with ReimuB and MarisaA/B. It's ReimuA and SanaeA that I'm having problems with.

>>Why, why would you choose UFO for this.
It's my favorite game. I had my first Easy and Normal 1cc on it as well as my first Hard. Maybe it will be my first Lunatic as well.
>>Shouldn't be any problem for you.
I still barely beat SA on easy. It's the only game I haven't yet done in normal. SA is a nightmare for me. It doesn't even have my precious Master Spark!
