MLP and Touhou? Nah, those aren't nearly similar enough. The fanbases, fanworks, and origins aren't nearly similar enough either. You wanna make a valid comparison, let's take something else from Japan that is almost identical to Touhou, differing only in it's target audience.
Consider Axis Powers Hetalia:

-The principle characters are moe anthropomorphizations. In Touhou's case, it's mythical creatures and folklore. In Hetalia's case, it's countries.

-Both properties are extremely gender dominant in one respect. Touhou has a much larger female cast, and Hetalia has a much larger male cast.

-Both are also extremely heavy on fanworks. Take a look at nicovideo parodies for Touhou and nicovideo parodies for hetalia. You can find one for almost anything.

-The original works in both properties are also recognizable by their unique and characteristic art style, namely Hidekaz and ZUN's character designs.

Let's delve deeper:

-Both properties also feature characters with highly elaborate and thematic costumes. In the case of Touhou, the outfits all very much have a lolita flavor, while in the case of Hetalia, the outfits take on a more militaristic style. Both of these tend to be particularly attractive to the target audiences of each respective property.

-There is a great amount of homoerotic tension found in both properties too. This, once again, plays right into the hands of the target audience.

I think the problem is Touhou is targeted at adults (mostly men) who play video games. Its fanbase is mainly adults (mostly men) who play video games.

Now, MLP is targeted at prepubescent and teenage girls. It looks like its fanbase has as many adult men as it has prepubescent and teenage girls.

Like it was said before, both are pretty nice stuff for their target audience. Hell, the new MLP series looks really well-done compared to the shitty 80s version, I'm glad girls get something good enough to watch nowadays.

My Little Pony is run by an American entertainment and toy industry behemoth called Hasbro. Touhou is created by a drunken Japanese otaku who doesn't even makes much profit from it (ZUN has another job) and is run pretty much entirely by the fandom.

My Little Pony is all about cheesy messages about friendship magic and shit. Touhou is about ancient Japanese mythology.

My Little Pony is all cute and fluffy fluffy good things. Touhou is more like life, it can be cute and fluffy, it can be dark and horrific, it can be mundane and normal.

Most importantly: My Little Pony was initially aimed at children, older people started picking it up due to its clever writing. Touhou was always for young adults.

Also as an FYI for the ponyfaggot(s) samefagging this thread, Reitaisai is the annual Touhou convention in Japan. Yes, it is big enough to have its own con. It also has its own board on 2chan. That's like if MLP had its own board on 4chan.

MLP on the other hand is mostly asperger 15-20 year olds who jumped onto what was originally a /b/ trolling bandwagon, taking what was very much intended from the start as a little girl cartoon and trying to warp it into something that it just isn't. Touhou on the other hand was made from the start as a hardcore shooter game series, which it still is 15 years later, only also there've been some official fighting games for it too. Touhou is dedicated for gamers, MLP is dedicated for little girls.

That's why we hate "bronies" so much; they have woven themselves into this grand, elaborate self-delusion that MLP is somehow not what it is. In doing so they attempt to spread this notion all over the place in order to try to convince people that their (false) vision of the show is true and that it's cool, but all they are doing is opening up a mile-wide asshole and ejecting pony diarrhea all over the internet where it is very much unwanted, such as this fucking thread. As a backup they just psuedo-pretend that they were just trolling all along, as an escape route in the face of biting criticism, but they can't hold out forever. Give it up.
