Vandal Hearts 2 was one of those video games that had amazing DETAILED plot and story, but the gameplay was kind of a chore to go through (since all the battles were the same). Also a really beautiful OST.

I'm going to seriously do with Disgaea. It's the only tactical game that I've ever had to use tactics on, even if it was just stacking up people to throw them around the map.

Other games either were about grinding up dudes or stopping them from leveling so the level matching enemies wouldn't kill the static level people you were supposed to protect in one hit.

I wonder if Front Mission is any different. Never played those.

Vandal Hearts 2 is pretty awesome, such a great story.

This here is a good mecha srpg. A friend and I really enjoyed it, though it takes a long time to play. After you get past the first couple of stages that mostly teach you how to play, every stage took me 3-4 hours to complete. You get to assign 3 groups of soldiers to each mech, and depending on type and placement you get different orders for them. Really good game.

I think it would make a great mecha anime aswell.

What is the measure of greatness? I'd wager 'fun' should be a pretty solid factor in it. I seriously doubt people are suggesting the Disgaea grind-fests are legitimately entertaining, but rather, the series itself lives off of being fun and entertaining. Sure, they pander to the power-gamers and have a ton of content, but they're stupidly unbalanced and require a lot of mindless work to accomplish much. They have a lot in common with MMORPGs in that sense -- while you occasionally might enjoy it, a significant portion of what you're doing is closer to work than entertainment.

They actually are. You can move your characters around the field with other units. You can use more than just the guys you chose at the start. You can capture enemies or toss them into each other. You can manipulate where bonus panels are. You can do a lot of things compared to games where you just move and then choose an action.

And I didn't say you were, but you don't need to belittle Disgaea because you think SWR is great.

Tactics Ogre PSP is pretty unmatched when it comes to sheer detail. It's one hell of a game due to all the routes, the classes, and the SYDNEY ORCHESTRA music and stuff. Even all the bosses with the GENERIC class sprites get a backstory.

For a gameplay perspective I would say it completely blows FFT out of the water. More customization, more options, and way more characters available on field at a time (usually 8-10, sometimes 12. I think FFT capped at 5?)

From a story perspective it's debatable. FFT had more of a religious overtone to all the fighting where as TO is more about the various nations and races clashing over the land with the gods taking a backseat. Either way, you get a great (if not overly ambitious) Yasumi Matsuno written story, so it doesn't matter.

- Sydney Orchestra music
- Redone character art
- Improved (near perfect) translation/editing.
- The gameplay runs like 2x faster, and it's generally more playable through small tweaks (i.e. units regen health after battles like FFT).
- A few new classes and characters (personal favorite is the DFC necromancer Cressida).

>For a gameplay perspective I would say it completely blows FFT out of the water. More customization, more options, and way more characters available on field at a time (usually 8-10, sometimes 12. I think FFT capped at 5?)

You must be out of your mind.
The only true thing there is the character available on field cap.
Otherwise TO really doesn't have much customization.
Most classes and abilities are useless too, the unique characters except for some very few exception are completely similar with generic stat/ability wise
In the end it's just about how many archers you have on your team, FFT felt much more varied.

You seem to be speaking solely for a min/maxing point of view, in which case FFT is just as guilty as TO is. Archers and Ninjas are both stupidly overpowered in TO, yes, but are you telling me Orlandu, Brawler Ninjas with 97 bravery, and Calculators weren't? Not to mention grinding in FFT was the easiest and most broken thing to ever exist in an SRPG. Both games had useless classes and abilities, let's just be honest.

They amount of customization available in both is completely dependent on what you make of it. And as someone who plays games for fun, the amount of characters usable along with the skill system gave me far greater variety in TO than I ever had in FFT.

Props to FFT:WotLK for making Rafa almost decent though. Being able to one-shot the final boss if luck was on your side was never so fun before.

Difference is that you won't get them till the very end of the game in a normal playthrough.
In TO you get a gamebreaking character in like the 3rd mission.

And you seem to only care about aesthetic, sorry but that's not customization.
Once again there is absolutely no difference between the unique characters and the generic in TO, so no matter how many different characters they give you it's just a difference of skin.

And even the skill system, considering the low amount of unique skills the various classes give you and the amount of time you have to grind to get the weapon finishers I don't see any fun there.

FFT, followed by Seisen no Keifu
The original TearRing Saga was amazing too. Made by the creator of FE. It has permadeath, yet your party members stay involved in the story after they join your team (unless they die, of course). I can't think of any other game that does this, not counting the support conversations of FE.

>> No.7584216

I don't know why FFT gets the worship it does. I was mad when characters just disappear from the storyline when they permanently join your party. Agrias ceases to exist, are you fucking kidding me? This is horseshit and unacceptable. The game makes it look like Ramza fought alone storywise.

I much prefer a game like Vandal Hearts 2, interesting characters that are all important in their own way and remain that way the entire game.

As for gameplay, I didn't like grinding through classes I wouldn't use to get to the one I wanted. It was time wasting and annoying.

You fight him/her/it and you get it. Also note that when you defeat it for the first time, the game will lag like hell. I'm not exactally sure why but, I've read that the game is checking to see if you have the room or not so just wait it out.

As for room inspections, just train in a different room. I don't know how many rooms you actually use but, reseting the rooms and looking for one with lower level enemies help out.
