Suwako didn't really become true brickshitting material until SWR123 made her the cutest little god ever.

I think the loss in Tewi's stocks is related how they have gradually made her dickishness more and more canon. Originally she was just some loli rabbit who appeared as a midboss in Reisen's stage, but with PoFV they made "Tewi the trickster" canon, and in Inaba of the Moon and Earth made Tewi the trickster into "Tewi the dipshit who should be smacked around a bit".

That's just me though, I don't actually know how common this view is.

Yeah, a lot of character development comes in as a bonus of being in one of the fighters. I suppose that's why Suika and Tenshi were very popular despite (for a while) being known only from their lines/animation/bio from their respective appearances in the fighters.

Ok well, actually, Cirno was already very well-known, so her Soku appearance didn't cause much of a stir.. but, we were basically in the dark as to how Suwako actually behaved. Before, people heard "ancient earth goddess" and thought of her more like pic related. After she appeared in Soku, she comes across much more like a playful, goofy, carefree goddess.

You know, pretty much all Touhous are among the most popular Touhous. There's so much material for all of them it's easy to get stuck with your favorites and not notice how others are doing.

What really happened is Eientei stopped being related to the current story at some point, while Moriya Shrine still is. Of course you're going to see Suwako and not Tewi whenever recent events are discussed.
