I must admit, Touhou is one of the few series where the protagonist is a Darwinist, yet she is completely like-able and not annoying or edgy.

Personally, I feel the Touhou fanbase is one of the better fanbases in existence, simply for all the creative shit that comes forth from it. You have the doujinshi, the fan-made games/spinoffs, and various other projects.

They are pretty chill for the most part.

What do those other fanbases do apart from circlejerking and doing a comparative analysis, of their favorite series, to every other similar work of fiction?

Do they actually get together and do anything worthwhile?

I didn't think so.

That is because so far as what i know, There's no franchise that is a sandbox/Open world as Touhou Project. You are given a world, bunch of characters and settings. The rest is yours to play around with.

Sure there is canon and stuff, But as ZUN allows people to have fun, thus making everyone has their own definition of what this and that characters are. Also in every Touhou fans exists a Gensokyo of it's own. It's like a hordes of parallel world of Gensokyo

Sandbox alone would do nothing. You have to give people tools and materials to build their world from. Otherwise all you get is... well, sand castles.

People (both those praising and bitching about fandom) always fail to realize that pretty much every bit of setting and characterisation it plays with has been introduced by ZUN himself at one point. Without the initial creator providing the vast and solid foundation, nothing of that scale could possibly grow and thrive.

And yes, there is another "franchise" similar to Touhou. It's for a different demographic, though. Hetalia. In a way, it's actually better than Touhou, since it doesn't even require the creator to do anything past designing characters, people can just take from centuries of world history.

If Reimu did that she would not be doing her job correctly.

Too many characters have powers that could incredibly upset the balance of Gensokyo, which means Reimu wouldn't be doing her job right.

The same reason that youkai aren't allowed to eat one another. She probably doesn't care either way, but it could be a problem if a youkai got so powerful (from consuming others) that they could potentially destroy the balance. Her job is to keep the balance.

Not to mention, no matter how dire (from a mundane standpoint) she will not get involved with human affairs. She does her job, quite thoroughly, and leaves it at that.

Reimu's methods may be kind of questionable but she, more or less, puts her feelings to the side to do her job.

I think the reason Reimu isn't unlikable is cause she doesn't use Social Darwinism to justify social inequality. Though she believes in Darwinism and has the ideals, she doesn't show preferential treatment to strong or weak youkai. You're strong? She beats your ass. You're weak? She beats your ass. Everyone gets an equal chance at ass-kicking. An equal opportunity ass-kicker.

You can't force outside-world facts into Touhou, Gensokyo is run by beliefs and fiction, the way things run are based on what people believe they are. Like in the old ages where everyone believed in polygamy and thought that every natural event was caused by their god/common belief. Not to mention, apples that are knocked down by the wind, while somewhat carrying their purpose, are by no means any better than the ones that stayed.

You may as well be criticizing them for believing in ghosts as well.

She never said ''best'', she only said that the apples that stayed were the strongest ones. The ones that fall, while fullfilling their duties, only mean that they are less fresh and start to rot away the moment they leave the tree.

>>7561061
Apples that ripen also get to spread their seeds. In fact, they get to spread their seeds a fair distance away from the original tree where they are more likely to thrive, rather than in the shade of the original tree where they will have to compete with the mother.

The development of fruit is an evolutionary benefit because otherwise trees wouldn't bother expending energy creating fruit; they would simply drop the seeds to the ground.

What OP actually talks about is the so-called "social darwinism", which has in fact little to do with Darwin's actual theories. It's basically a glorification of extreme individualism and egoism, motivated by the fact that evolution works by eliminating unfit individuals from the gene pool, which is a good thing and should be encouraged.

The movement died out when people who actually understood the theory started pointing out that fitness does not equal wealth, strength or anything of the like, just the ability to produce offsprings, and that the ability of cooperation and empathy is an important evolutionary trait.
