Hi, /jp/

I'm not a regular denizen of this board but I believe you guys are the best to ask this to.

So for the longest time I've been wanting to get into Touhou but I have no idea where to start. What games should I play first, what ones are worth playing and what ones are worth skipping out entirely?

>> No.7443693

play the windows ones.

Nothing from the pc-98 ones is important.

except maybe Yuka's pajama's.

>> No.7443698

Leave.

>> No.7443702

play touhou 08 imperishable night first, it's beginner friendly.
eventually you should get to all of them in time.

>> No.7443699

>>7443693

So I should start with "Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil" and play chronologically from there?

>> No.7443703

>>7443693
Adding to this, DON'T start with IN.
Teaches really bad bombing habits that I still struggle with.

>> No.7443707

>>7443702

Ok, so start with 08 and then play 06 onwards chronologically?

>> No.7443710

Perfect Cherry Blossom and Mountain of Faith I think are the most beginner-friendly. The latter has nicer graphics. I'd recommend playing all of the Windows games, though. Heaven knows I haven't beaten a single one but it's nice to change it up once in a while.

Also, run while you can.

>> No.7443711

>>7443703
well it doesnt seem like he's going for high score rankings, I think he should be fine with IN.

>> No.7443720

>>7443711
Not even with score, I just find myself dying with loads of unused bombs because I got too used to Imperishable Night's really big deathbomb window.
Probably why I can't clear PCB yet.

>Also, run while you can.

That last bit was important. Consider what you're doing here. You will get sucked in and then hang out on /jp/ all day, and your life will slowly start to suck more and more.
It happened to me ;_;

Also, the PC-98 games were fun. And hard. I see nothing wrong with them.

>> No.7443730

I'd recommend either starting with EoSD(06) or PCB(07). I don't think IN should be the starter, not because it's not starter friendly, but the fact it suddenly adds a lot of playable characters that you just met as bosses in the previous games made my heart race at least.

>You will get sucked in and then hang out on /jp/ all day, and your life will slowly start to suck more and more.

I pretty much live this way anyway, minus the /jp/

So Touhou has an interconnected story between the games? At the moment I'll probably start with Perfect Cherry Blossom.

>> No.7443743

>>7443734
Minimal interconnected story. Just some characters tend to reappear later(at least in mention). But it gives you a thrill to play as some of the bosses you met in the previous games.

>> No.7443746

First find a Touhou waifu through secondary works.
then find out what game she's from and clear it on lunatic

>> No.7443752

I'd recommend EoSD to start with. PCB and IN start adding on features that could be considered "help," and these features might spoil you making it hard to go back and beat EoSD should you ever choose to. Of course I'm not 100% sure on this as I decided to start with EoSD for that reason but it sure seems like that to me.

>> No.7443754

I started with IN.
By far, my favorite game. I'll always keep a special place in my heart for it.
It's ZUN's favorite too, by the way.
EXTRA boss is my favorite character.

>> No.7443757

>>7443743

Ok thanks for the help.

>>7443746

I already have a waifu and wouldn't dream on betraying her, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't fond of Reimu, but she appears to be in most of them anyway.

>>7443752

Yes, I will probably start with EoSD. I don't want to start with something to user friendly that would make other games too much of a challenge. Thanks for your help.

Cirno can be pretty cute sometimes, that's for sure. She's a bit dumb though!

Go play Mars Matrix.

I have another question. For the PC-98 games, do I need some sort of emulator to run them, such as DOS-Box?

>> No.7443775

>>7443768
Yes.
http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Touhou_Wiki

That website will become your friend during your adventure into Touhou. It should have info on an emulator somewhere, most likely in the articles about the PC-98 games.

>> No.7443777

>>7443768
Yes either use Anex86 or T98 emulator.

>> No.7443781

Anex86 is fine

I have Next v13.1b and it works great for me. You might consider that as another emulator to use.

Touhou is the Mega Man X of Shmups, if you like any of them you'll like all of them.

You can't really go wrong with which one you play first. If you play the older ones though consider the Vsync patch to fix input lag

I too was going to play them for some time, even have them all on HDD. But i heared the danmaku thing is difficult. Being not much a hardcore gamer, shall i play easy or normal mode?
Also, will my Asteroids experience help me in Touhou?

Normal. Never play easy, unless you want to have all difficulties clear.

>Also, will my Asteroids experience help me in Touhou?
No.

Anyway, start with EoSD or LLS.
