How do you "win" at Japanese Mahjong?

It seems the objective is to make 4 "sets" which can either be 3 of the same tile or 3 tiles in consecutive order, along with a single pair.

But since the tiles you get are mostly random(unless your opponent deliberately feeds or does not feed you the tiles you want), you can't really control which ending hand you get, if any.

The only skill involved here seems to be keeping track of 3 player's worth of discarded tiles and trying to figure out what their hands are.

So tell me, how are you supposed to get the last tiles you want to "Ron"?

And how do you figure out when to "pon" or "chii"? Should you always pon or chii when the opportunity presents itself?

>> No.7394500

Try not to pon or chii unless your hand is in a GODLIKE POTENTIAL status, like full color or honors hand. The general rule of thumb is not to pon or chii unless it gives you a double DIRECTLY, such as wind or honor tiles. Riichi is worth one double anyway, and ura-dora doesn't always get you something.

It's all about probability. Discard tiles you think won't likely bring you to victory. Pros I hear don't even try to win in most games, only do when they have a very good hand in the beginning. In other matches they just sit and throw away tiles that are not likely to get them ronned.

You have to choose what tiles you want to discard. This allows you to choose what hand you're going for, and you need to take into account the risks and advantages of your choice - how many of the tiles you need are still in the wall? Is anybody hoarding tiles you need? Does it mean you'll have to discard tiles that can get you Ronned? Do you have a reasonable chance of getting your hand, or should you switch to a simpler hand? Should you pon/chi/kan? Is the hand you're trying for worth it?

Although the tiles are distributed randomly, there are a lot of choices you have to make. Each choice adds more strategy, which requires skill to understand.

According to Mahjong manga as long as you are a "pro" every game you start will be within 1-3 tiles away from a god tier hand.

How true is this in professional tournaments?

Not exactly, take this game for instance, aki pro's opening hand barely has the seeds of a kokushi musou.

Even pros don't win every round, since the game is so heavily based upon luck.
The aim of the game is to aim for the best hand you think you can get before someone else finishes their hand, and win the rounds that you do with the most points possible.

Why is it that sometimes when i want to ron, i get a error saying "No multiplier"?

E.G. I have the following :

-1 2 3
-a pair of 2 circles
-kan, 4 west
-pon, 3 of 6 bamboo
-3, 4 circle and i want to ron with a 5 circle

Yet the game won't let me?

Learning the yaku takes maybe a day. If you don't know them all, just don't call on tiles. What you're basically asking is "do I need to know the rules of the game to play?" Surprisingly, yes.

Riichi (1 fan)

When your hand is ready and fully concealed, you can call "Riichi".

The combinations in poker follow very basic rules(sequential, same suit, etc).

The combinations in mahjong to call ron are basically someone in ancient times saying "lol this combination is teh winnar".

Whats the point of pon and chii anyway?

>> No.7399212

>>7398696
Using riichi the right way further allows you to control the flow of the game. It can potentially give you a psychological advantage, but you have to weigh it against the point deposit needed to declare riichi and the restrictive nature of being under its effect.

>> No.7399222

>>7398696
Riichi - 1
Tanyao - 1
Pinfu - 1
Tsumo - 1 / Ron - 0
Dora - X (depending on dora indicator and red5)
Without riichii you have zero chance of getting a mangan unless you have 2doras in your hand at the moment. With riichii you can easily bump extra 2han with an uradora.

There is no surefire rule in declaring riichii and not declaring riichii. This really depend on feel. If you are playing in high level room, declaring riichii usually mean not having any chance of having ron and depending 100% on tsumo and a high chance of playing into someone else hand. But on the other hand it has a chance to turn a shit hand into a monster hand with luck and making the other 3faggots turtle like hell especially if you can declare an early riichii.
