Pffft, no. They're Stormtroopers; only dangerous in the first scene. Canonically, Zaku's tear the galaxy to shreds initially, but get outdated and obsolete fairly soon.
They are, however, incredibly awesome. Everything the Feddies shit out looks silly. Gundams just don't look believable, and GMs aren't much better. But Zeon stuff, for the most part, looks like it was built to fight, not look cool, and the Zaku defines that.

Well, vs Gundams, yeah Zakus aren't so good, but that's mostly because Gundams are ridiculously fucking overpowered compared to everything else out there, that's why they're the stars of the series. For example a normal Zaku machine gun literally can't penetrate a Gundam's armor at all... they need to use a bazooka to have even a slight hope of damaging one, and those are extremely easy for a Newtype pilot to dodge. The pilot is almost more important than the suit actually, a grunt suit could down a Gundam if the Gundam pilot just really sucked (such as the GP01 getting trashed by a Gelgoog).

In general though, when they're not up against fucking overpowered Gundams, Zakus kick ass. Being introduced so early, the Federation's GM suits severely outclassed Zakus specs wise.. armor, weaponry, reactor output everything.. yet Zakus can still kill the shit out of GMs despite the handicap, they're that badass.

Evens so, I tend to think of Alice's dolls as usually being more of temporary / sacrificial in nature unless they were named ones like Hourai or Shanghai. So, probably the only certain way the Goliath doll could win is if it blew itself up.

GMs had wimpy beam sabers, especially the first ones. Short blade, less power etc.

In later Gundam series / alternate universes though, beam sabers are much much more like lightsaber rip offs in that they just chop through fucking everything like butter and are god-mode for melee range. However, the original Gundam and GM's beam sabers acted I guess more like.. I dunno, giant plasma torches. On the other hand Heat Hawks and Heat sabers were shown to be able to cleave through shit like butter, a heat saber can chop a mobile suit clean in half actually. Heat Hawks could even penetrate Gundarium armor, which was why the Alex very nearly lost against a Zaku armed with nothing but a Heat Hawk.

That was a part of it it, but it was more like GMs had a lot of other problems besides just the pilots, they were really fucking shoddy machines that would break down on their own all the time, no surprise considering that they were built at a seemingly-impossibly-fast rate.

The crappiness of the original GMs is partly why the GM II was so fucking useless in Zeta; a lot of GM IIs were just upgraded RGM-79s, and so they could inherit those terrible mechanical issues.

DOMS were already showing up by the time the GMs became staple.

When the war went back into space, the GM out performed the MS-09R Rick Doms in most ways and were outperformed later by the MS-14 Gelgoogs, even though the Gelgoogs were better they weren't that much better and probably couldn't fight any more than 5 at a time if the GM's pilots were rookies and the Gelgoog's pilot was a vetran but most of the Gelgoog pilots were rookies.

The Zaku II is the best goddamned robot the Gundam franchise has ever come up with, despite being utter cannon fodder in most of its appearances, being outclassed by the GM in terms of specs, armament, and armour, despite being obsolete as soon as the Dom came online.

The Zaku isn't very powerful at all. Specs-wise, it's weaker than everything else. It's restricted to only a few main armaments, which tend to be weaker than anything else on the market (the GM gets equipped with "beam spray guns", while the Zaku never gets anything more powerful than its 120mm MG and huge bazooka!") The Zaku appreciation comes from its excellent design, imposing but not ostentatious. One of many, a mass-produced weapon of war.

Real men use lightweight pieces of shit with no armor and weakass lasers and still win.

I like how the Gouf Custom has totally eclipsed the Gouf, which never appears ever again. This is an example of GOOD RETCONNING. The heat rod was totally stupid to begin with, the electro-grapple is sleeker, gives you better range, and makes you look slightly less like a gladiator.
