It depends on what you are looking for in a game.
If you want scroll-shooting, don't play the first.
if you hated PoFV avoid the third.
If you like yuuka, play the fifth.
If you like retro, go play.
If you think visible hitboxs and enemy location at the bottom are for cheaters, go play.
If you care about the dialogue but can't read moon, avoid.
If you can't arse yourself to find and use a good emu, avoid.

BTW, are there any MSX games worth checking out there? (besides the first PM)

It should be good enough for playing, but Do remember, it's an emulator; not a remake. the graphics and music will match.

Than again, whan playing I'm usually too busy dodging than noticing the music. but there are some good themes in pc98 games. I personally liked Yumeko theme- doll of misery and one of yuukas themes- sleeping terror.

Don't listen to music in these emulators, their sound emulation is terrible.
Use FMPMD instead for that purpose.

If you set up the emulator properly, the sound is about the same as this program, except I can't hear any of the "drum" sounds with FMPMD for some reason.

I'm new to Touhou and I'm also a rather hardcore gamer and _always_ start with the first game in the franchise, so I started at TH1 and am currently on TH2 and I really don't understand what's wrong with it, I like it. Could someone explain in detail why the game is bad?

It's not bad, it's just relatively worse.

SoEW is not bad. It just has some issues:
- Your hitbox gets bigger when you die;
- Rika can kill you immediately after the fight begins if you're not prepared;
- Meira is the randomest;
- Stage 2, 3, 5 are memorization fest;
- Extra Stage is both ridiculously easy and ridiculously hard at the same time.

Games from 2-5 are worth playing

Reimu's attack system is really broken cuz you can get randomly hit by bullets or that yin yang orb even if you strike at them

Not the same person but I believe this is true, unless it's some other factor I can't determine. On extra stage I would kill myself at the very beginning for more power ups early on, and when I did this I wasn't able to dodge the second wave of bullets that come out of the floor by staying in the bottom left corner. Works fine if there's no deaths before that point though.
