Although the system requirements don't mention it the game needs sse2 that's why it doesn't run on older machines only pentium 4's and up no athlon's can run it. it also doesn't load everything into the memory. i checked, the character spritesheets are usually loaded on a needed basis.

the game takes around 300 mb of ram usually, or at least that's how big the memory dumps are.

So I've been going through the game at the pace of go through stage until I reach the boss, lose all my lives at the boss. Continue from the beginning of that boss's stage, reach the boss and actually beat it this time since I've figured out what to do. After that I go through the next stage then lose at the next stage's boss. Situation repeats.

How many stages does this game have? And when do I get more subweapons? Last thing I reached was the stage 4 boss.

Turned the lives to 20, but also changed the difficulty to hard. Stage 5 is brutal. And I don't have a lick of an idea on how you're supposed to beat Reimu. The only time I've noticed that I can get a safe hit on her is right when she starts her pattern. Every other moment she's doing jumpwhipping, sliding, and shooting amulets all over the place. The fact that she also has a melee weapon she uses makes it very hard to attack her.

The best thing to do is jump over her slide, avoid the whip and hit her a couple of times on the pause. Then just focus on dodging until the next short pause. It's slow, but safe.

Hard player here. Beat her before I read your post. I stuck entirely to throwing knives for offense. I like how every boss battle in this game has resorted to me using knives. Like I have to danmaku for the danmaku battles. Alice, Chen, Youmu, Marisa, and now Reimu, all defeated with knifespam. Also Alice's dolls are great for enemies you don't want to deal with. IIRC from one of their blog posts, it was official, but they didn't do it. One of their friends that had spent a couple years in France did, hence the inclusion of French in the translations for no reason. It still wasn't a great translation anyway, full of Engrish and other issues.
If someone has a way to edit the scripts, I could do a quick translation over the weekend, but usually hacking takes a while, and it's often not worth it on early versions since new patches mean work has to be redone.

When I try to run the config I get the "Error: Startup Failed" and when I try the installer I just get "install: an unexpected error has occured". The game itself is just the black screen.

In the first game, I have reached stage 3 then after I got game over, I closed the Koumajou.exe. But when I start Koumajou.exe again and choose 'continue', I started from stage 1 again. Why it doesn't continue from stage 3? Is this really the case? or am I doing something wrong?

For those with the Blackscreen issue, you need an actual ISO of the game. Mount it on the virtual CD app of your choice (IE Daemon Tools) and run the installer that way. Just running it from your computer will cause a fatal error. The game seems to refuse to run unless you properly install it, patcher has the same issue.

Well tbh none of the bosses were too hard. Youmu was a bit messy until I found out you can lure her to the right corner of the cave and she'll durr hitting said corner while you knivespam. Marisa does have a set pattern, jump/float then crouch for her lasers and the promotional video told me what to do for her Earth Light Ray so I was prepared. For Reimu you just have to keep your distance to lure the bullets but hitting her without getting hit yourself is a bit tough. Ran's easy if you just use Reimu's orbs, as is Yuyuko.

My HP was wasted for EX-Remi but after you find the gaps in her lasers it's a matter of floating in those and spam Reimu's orbs.

Yukari sounded deliciously trolled in the 3rd Omake so hot damn is a translation of that needed.

Gameplay is exceptional, like what I'd hope a new
Castlevania game would be (not a RPG style Metroidvania). Boss spellcard patterns almost feel like I'm playing a shmup. Stages feels like classic platforming Castlevania.

Voices are probably the most stand out part of the game, and more than half of them fit well.

Controls without a pad are even more godawful than the original because of a higher necessity for precise movements and the slide being a backstep.

The art is probably my favorite stuff out of Banpai Akira, and that's saying something. Remilia in particular has a fantastic portrait.

As for difficulty, it's even harder than KD1, but less cheap (at least once I started using a pad and got the controls down). Only a couple cases of enemies getting bullshit hits in due to camera positioning, and the boss patterns are a lot more fun. Also, I played through KD1 before the hitbox fixing patch, so it's nice to actually be able to dodge shit.

I can honestly say this game met my expectations exactly. Great art, great music, great voice work, difficult but not cheap, and short but sweet.

I don't know what they changed from the trial, but bosses are a LOT more fair. Chen kept raping me even on normal, but she barely touched me in this, and in fact I didn't die against any boss until Marisa, who is a huge (lovable) bitch. Instant kill master spark and spamming illusion lasers for 20 seconds? Oh you.

Overall the only bosses I would say were remotely difficult were Marisa, Reimu, and Remilia's final form. Yukari was a pushover and I didn't even get hit by her the first time (kept accidently killing Ran as soon as she was summoned, even).

The thing that made Remilia difficult for me is that I was thinking in terms of the good end / bad end tradition of Castlevania. I noticed I could hit her individual parts, so I thought maybe if I destroyed her wing/arm throne instead of her I would get a good end, and if I depleted her health bar before then it would perma-kill Remilia for a bad end. Kind of like the Richter battle in SoTN. That and you really have to remember where the lasers go.

The difference between Easy modo and Normal is barely noticeable, but the step up to hard is absolutely retarded. Yes, double the amount of bullets on everything and make attacks that didn't shoot bullets do so now. Go ahead and give everything 1.5x more health. They skipped non relevant bosses and whatnot like Rumia and Letty. So we probably won't be expecting either Mystia or Wriggle to make it in, but who knows. Since it can't be Castlevania without a vampire, Remilia is still probably going to be the final boss. Either that or she'll be the next main character. Since she was a playable character in IN. Actually maybe switchable characters will be introduced in Touhouvania 3.

The most likely prospects for main charater is either teams, Remilia, or even possibly Marisa since she's a magician style character which has also been a type of main character in the Castlevania series.

Frankly I spammed Flandre to beat Yuyuko. I haven't beaten the final boss yet. Getting past Remilia a bit difficult, but i think I can pull it off without having to use Flandre. I played the game this morning and was pleasantly surprised with how the game turned out. I didn't hate the first game, but I liked this much more.
Any boss after Reimu gets hit with a healthy dose of yin-yang spam, just so I can hear her "hai hai"s. Fuck, I love Reimu.

Most of them throughout the game can be avoided. If need be you can dance on their heads with heel kicks, Alice works too.
I standby that the most pain-in-the-ass enemy is the werewolf. Fuck those things.

Also, has anybody else noticed that the enemy active range (or whatever you call it) is just a little bit off. You can inch up to a ton of the sword type enemies and slash them to death from the edge of your range and they won't even notice you.

Also Marisa's illusion lasers have a safespot, on the right side of the room, crouch on top of the ladder, unless she's an inch away from you.

Alright. I just got to Remilia, and I'm stumped about how to avoid one of the attacks in her second form. It's one where all of these laser tracers are all spun around the room followed by the actual lasers. There's seemingly nowhere to hide from that.

I installed the game in Windows XP, but it crashes after Aja's logo. Then I tried running the game in Windows 7 (dual boot) and it worked without any problems.

Seems like the opening video makes it crash on XP for some reason. I can't skip it either.

trust me, if you aren't playing on hard then you are wasting your time. There is such a gigantic chasm in boss difficulty between hard and normal; the only way to advance is to master flying ability and completely familiarize your hit radius while flying. If you play on anything of a lesser challenge then a lot of the gameplay mechanics and design falls by the wayside. The only things in the game that seem to be under-utilized are the daggers and clock which is a symbolic shame and as a Sakuya-fan its a BIG disappointment. I mean I like that their loose-requirement is on the subtle side I just feel they should have added more encouragement towards Sakuya's defining characteristics in order to better distinguish the game and harmonize it with it's main protagonist. Maybe that'll change in later levels on hard but as for now they seem very inconsequential to everything but the score so unless a high score on hard unlocks anything (playable China PLEASE!) I don't see the ultimate purpose; however, flying and dagger throwing is convenient at times.

with how cheap the daggers are I would have loved to see an ability to radially/angularly throw them (like with holding the item-button + holding/tapping up or down) and have them bounce on walls and ceilings. The coolest thing in the game -- freeze time, down-jump and attack which lets you freeze sets of daggers in midair and then release them once time becomes unfrozen -- has no place in the game at all!!!

Sakuya's hitbox feels wonky. On the air it kind of feels like how my intuition would guess it is. But on the ground it's large as all hell.
