A sheet of paper and a pen.

The soft hum of my computer.

Earphones fill my ears with music as I sit at my desk, pen in hand.

I take another two sheets out of a drawer.

In contrast to the sheet in front of me, these two sheets are filled with text.

I read through them.

I pick up my pen, but put it down again to read through the text-filled sheets again.

Finally putting the sheets back into the drawer, I pick up my pen to start writing.

I put the pen on the paper...

...but the pen makes no movement.

I can't do it...

Hmm, it does look like what I do. Except I tend to focus on describing far too many little details hoping that their presence will fill the void of actual story.

I found it weird to see the references to pen and paper. Most go for the maddening sight of the empty word processor. Pure white with a lone flickering line indicating it's still waiting for something, anything. Teasing you.
Doesn't help that just behind the hostile white that reminds you of your inability to create lays a world that doesn't care about your lack of skill and is just waiting to entertain you with amusing images and the comfort of the traditional. Before you notice, you have to turn on the lights on your room. The sun has fallen, and another day was filled with nothing but the endless pressing of the F5 button.

Yup, that sounds more like me. Add some reference to the hum of computers and the oppressive feeling of a dark bedroom filled with little statues of girls that smile at you for no reason. Little girls that in the dead of night after another failed session feel like they're mocking you.

I completely hate it when writers do this, so I try to avoid describing more than is necessary to set the atmosphere.

Although I hate writing on paper, it's the typical image I have of writing, so it's what I use when, erm, writing about writing. I think the pen on the paper describes the willingness to start yet the inability to get something done far better than any computer analogy can. And it wasn't about keeping trying to write as in your analogy, but rather actually giving up and doing something else. I decided I'd just do it later and play G-Senjou for now.

Tell me about it. It slows down the reading to a crawl. Second to when they decide to write out some song but it doesn't works because there's no music. So all we have left is some half assed poetry.

I agree, the pen on paper feels better when referring to writing as writing. I just tend to go for the text processor one because it goes well with the theme I seem to be obsessed with.

Only good ideas I've ever had were scribbled maniacally on paper in scripts that I have trouble deciphering later on.

Good luck with the writing. I should pick it up again, and if you don't mind, I would like to see more of what you can do. Don't know, OC creative writing thread. It helps to write while knowing someone will read it, even if only to dissect it.

Wish we had a better place to do so though, but it's /jp/ related as long as it doesn't go into roleplaying or lousy fanfic territory. That's when you get banned.
