This thread is going to be for the unique quirks and gimmicks seen in the occasional VN trying to do something different, or something entirely new that we want to see in future VNs.

I'm going to start with timed choices. Those things are pants-shittingly awesome. The only thing more horrible than making the your heroine mad because you told her you didn't prefer her to another girl is making that heroine mad because you didn't tell her fast enough that you did. You had to think about it, and she knows, you cheating whore.

Also: percentage bar inputs. How loud a response do you want to make? How hard do you want to hit someone? Usually they're pretty intuitive but it's annoying missing getting a good response because there's a different result for 75% and 100%.

I want:

1) The game to make fun of you if you try to close it in the middle of an h-scene. "Had enough, eh? Oh well, I guess that's your limit, fu fu fu~!"

2) The game to make fun of you when you save just before making a decision. The save menu cuts away when you try to open it, you get a closeup of the heroine's disgruntled face and a complaint from her instead. "Hey, what are you doing? I'm asking you a question! Gosh, is it so hard to let me know how you're feeling?"

3) Third person perspectives, rather than first person perspectives. Sprites would be facing quarter-profile towards each other, like Fire Emblem sprites or some shit like that. This would force the protag to have a proper face and it would provide a more dynamic view for sprite-based scenes, which make up the bulk of VN content.

The first would be annoying if you were trying to close it when someone entered. They would hear that and know you were up to SOMETHING.

The second is okay by Craig's rules. Let the fact that you saved just before affect the outcome as well.

The third will never happen a whole lot. Most people like to forget that there is a protagonist. They want to BE the protagonist, and that would break the immersion. That's why it doesn't happen much, and why you don't usually see their face in H-scenes.

3) Yeah, I feel the same way about this as I do about the silent protagonist in classic JRPGs. I get that the point might be to make the player the protag, but I would prefer a protag who is fleshed out and not quite like me than a completely silent Link or Crono. Since the player is still driving the choices, I think it's perfectly okay to give the protag's lines some personality and flesh him out with a distinct appearance. Hell, it works well enough in Type Moon works, which flesh out their protagonist characters and give them sprites despite using a first person perspective. I think it could work out well.

Kanon's Yuuichi had a lot of personality, and he was a total hoot. That guy was awesome. I would love to see more of the same.

I find it funny that the "What would you want new in a VN" thread became "What should the girl say to you when you close out during an H-scene"

Anyways, I work for an indie gaming company and we're trying to make VNs more popular over here in the states by making them more accessible.
We already have our own VN engine that's relatively easy to port other VNs into, and a few of your suggestions really wouldn't be that hard to implement.

I'm just wondering how many of you would ACTUALLY like to see these either in future games?

Elements like timed choices can make a significant difference IMO, and it's not just about making the games more accessible. Think of RPGs like Fallout that let you choose your own path through the story: regardless of how simple or complex the decisions are, the fact that you can interact with the environment gives you the illusion that each of your decisions makes a difference to the game. If you weave elements like that into a visual novel you might be able to make the player think twice before clicking rather than saving first and knowing that it won't make a difference.

Think of it like the quirks in the Metal Gear series. All the gimmicky shit the games pulled by reading into stuff you did that you didn't expect it to read into was what made the game really memorable rather than an ordinary top-down action-espionage game.

Doing goofy shit like breaking the fourth wall now and then can go a long way in making your work stand out among others. Players come for the main course, but they remember the side dishes more than anything else.

I see. I won't try to derail this thread too much but everyone at our company has either intuitively thought of "subtle interaction" or wanted it in their game.
But let me tell you the relation between the amount of those you put in (x) and how long it takes to complete the writing for a game is roughly:
(Amount of regular plot choices) to the power of (x)

So, we can EASILY do that shit with our engine, but it puts massive stress on our writers.

I would like to see dialog trees where you can ask people stuff, then say "hang on, I have another thing I want to say" and say another thing, have conversations more interactive, like Planescape Torment or something.

Rarely do you get lots of choices of what to say in a vn, Casual Romance Club did a good job with this, as did Galaxy Angel but most VNs only give you the choice of what to do, not say.

but that kind of thing actually makes conversations less interctive. with your standard dialogue characters can interrupt each other and things can go back and forth pretty quickly. with the bioware style character A asks a question, then character B gives an answer, then character A asks another question, and so on. it ends up sounding really unnatural, like you're at a lecture instead of having a casual conversation. just look at the picture you posted. does anyone actually talk like that?

I'm late. But I always have conflicting feelings about options in VNs. On the one hand I like being able to impact the story, on the other hand I hate replaying things I've seen before.

Personally what I've not seen enough of, is good and helpful story trees, showing which paths you've done, and perhaps allowing you to kick-start into a new path by just choosing it, skipping all repetition.

That, and I want my shit bi-lingual so I have both Japanese text, furigana and translation all at once. (Something translation aggregator does well, but I find annoying when it is outside the screen, or when clicking next hides it because the game takes focus)

On the issue of routes and repetition, I think Fate/Stay Night does something right by making the routes branch off from each other very early in the story, so that there is as little repetition from one to the other as possible.
