6581066 No.6581066 [Reply] [Original]

I keep hearing about this touhou shooter game. I don't know much about it except that it plays like those classic arcade games where you fly around in a plane and dodge balls. I used to play those kinds of game in the arcade when I was younger (asteroids, space invaders, Raiden, etc) but I haven't played them in forever.

So, how would you recommend a newbie get into these touhou games? I see that there are a lot of them too, so which should I start with? I can't read any Japanese so are there English versions or something.

Please be gentle.

You shouldn't play the game with retexture patch before you have played to game itself. It's like buying a game and playing all the mods, but not the game itself.

start with the first one. Play each once, then choose the one you liked the most and clear it.

The hitbox patch shows you your hitbox in EoSD. EoSD is the only Windows Touhou that does not show you your hitbox when you focus. This makes it hard to tell where it is, but it ends up giving those who play EoSD regularly a good feel for where their hitbox is without needing to look at it even in other games.

The hitbox patch is honestly just a crutch for those who got too used to later games. So if you're beginning with EoSD, don't use it.

Scarlet Devil is kind of slower paced with a lot of small movements compared to later ones. I would really recommend keeping at it with a keyboard and practice micro tapping your arrows to make very slight movements. You either

tap faster and hold shift for focused movement. Holding the button longer than 3ms is too much for precise movement.

hey OP, you might want to check out Touhou 9,5 - Shoot the Bullet. the later levels are probably the hardest shit in touhou, but the earlier scenes are like a wonderful training ground. i used to be quite like you, but now i've beat several extra modes thanks to stb.

stb lets you play as aya and you have to shoot photos of the bullet patterns. why is it great?
-focuses on the pretty patterns, most of them are multilayered
-cuts out the stages, which are mostly boring
-gives you as many retries as you desire
-teaches you to not rely that much on bombing, cherry cheesing and other cowardly shit
-overall makes you feel like an alpha when you actually succeed

if you feel insecure get the sequel: 12.5 - Double Spoiler. it's slightly more forgiving

Not how you intended it, I'm sure, but this is ideal.
Unfocus your eyes a bit and detect motion instead of shape. You're having trouble because your brain is TRYING to do this automatically, and you keep focusing consciously on shape differentiation. Once you get used to it, THEN you can focus and work on grazing.

Or at least that's how it works for me.

>> No.6584164

>>6584118
It's a term for abusing the game mechanics of PCB. Every touhou usually has a scoring gimmick of some sort. PCB has cherry, basically the part that's cheesy was that after shooting enemies for a particular amount that changes depending on how many times you bomb or die you get temporary invincibility called a cherry border. If you don't get hit while it's on you get some score, however, if you do get hit or press the bomb button(this doesn't use a bomb in this instance) it clears the screen of all the bullets.

This is essentially a free bomb for anyone who does not care about score at all. With proper timing and use of the cherry mechanics you can get the border to show up at times you want for a bomb use that doesn't actually use any of your bombs.

>> No.6584193

No, no, that's only in EoSD, IN, MoF (assuming you don't use Marisa Bugged), and SA. In PCB, Sakuya is actually the best. The wide shot Sakuya with tons of strong bombs is the best for 1cc'ing, and the directional shot Sakuya with the LOOOOOONG bomb is the best for scoring.

>> No.6584547

>>6584234
Reimu-B trails behind Marisa-A for the highest cherry rate. Considering her other perks (small hitbox, decent spread, longer deathbomb time, generally favorable movement speed, strong bomb) she makes for the most well-rounded character. Marisa-B has an okay unfocused rate, but her damage is that much worse. Reimu-A's rate is bad, Sakuya-A has the worst and her gimped focused damage makes it more difficult than any other shot type to take down stage enemies when it counts, especially stage four.

If this is Jared I'm posting just to freak you out, but regardless do what I did and download them all (doesn't take long at all) and then play the ones you like.

I like 10 (mountain of faith), 12 (UFO), and 8 (impherishible night). Everyone shits on 8 because it has a long "death bomb" window. To explain, there's basically a window of about .3 seconds you have after you're hit by a bullet to press the bomb button and save yourself in all touhou games, but in touhou 8 that window is much longer, but consumes an extra bomb if you use the extended window. This isn't a reason to not play a great game though, so if you're super worried about learning bad habits just alternate with any other game while playing.

Also, if you want to relive your nostalgia download MAME, an emulator that lets you play all those old games and a ton you've never heard of.

As much as I'd like to like this game... something about it feels off.

It feels old.
There's definitely some potential, and it doesn't quite need to go straight to modern arcade shooter style to be immediately good, but it just feels kinda rough at the moment.

Shinkai Bay was a pretty fun level, though.

Random boss crab was pretty random.
